Ubuntu One Shutting Down

Recommended Posts

The Ubuntu One? file service is getting shut down.  It is no longer possible to purchase music from the Ubuntu store, and starting 1 June you will not be able to upload files.  You have until 31 July to download any files you have stored there.

Today we are announcing plans to shut down the Ubuntu One file services.  This is a tough decision, particularly when our users rely so heavily on the functionality that Ubuntu One provides.  However, like any company, we want to focus our efforts on our most important strategic initiatives and ensure we are not spread too thin.

I hate to see it go.  I've always ran it in the background on my Ubuntu machines and used it to sync my files across multiple Ubuntu? computers.  I trusted it more than competing choices like DropBox.  I have a large external that I use for actual "backups", but it was nice to be able to sync Document and Picture folders for quick access from any computer that had access to the internet, regardless of what operating system it was running.  I have even purchased quite a bit of music from their store.

Oh well, time to start researching a replacement and move my purchased Ubuntu music into my main music folder so I don't lose track of it later.

All my shell scripts & Raspberry Pi configurations are on there. What a shame they're doing this.

I've reinstalled DropBox, but it has less free storage and doesn't let you pick and choose pre-existing folders on your computer to synchronize.  If you want it sync'd it has to be moved into the DropBox folder.  At least that's how it's looking so far.

WebDAV + Box here by the looks of it. Hardly ideal.

Not sure why they made yet another cloud storage offering in the first place.

Probably the same reason Google and Microsoft did.

It's been around for quite a while, and came pre-installed in Ubuntu for several versions.  The Ubuntu One service is/was quite good, had clients available for Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, which meant that no matter what you were using, you could keep files on that device synchronized.  It was also handy that they had their music store integrated with it.

According to the blog post though, they are going to release the source code so anybody can take it and use it to set up their own similar service if they want to, even if it's just for private use, or even expand/improve on the source code and release it as their own new product/service.

Canonical doesn't have the resources to keep this non self-sustainable (let alone profitable) service going, that's all there is to it.

They can't compete on pricing, but they were doing pretty well on the free side: up to 25GB through referals.

And it was useful too: so far it was the only free online storage service supported by D?j? Dup.

It's not like we were short of alternative storage services, but it's still a shame.

Can't say I'm really surprised. It was a good service, but I never used it. I already have Dropbox and it more than served my needs.

Holy synronisation time-outs Batman! I had forgotten how bad this was. My hand has been forced and defeat conceded, signed up for a Drop Box account.

They simply can't compete with Google Drive's pricing. Canonical is a for-profit company.

Yeah, because Google do a native Ubuntu Google Drive client or the API / source for someone to write one.
