Password Manager

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I hope this is the right area to post this.  What are your recommendations on a password manager?  I have used LastPass in the past, but I would be more comfortable having the password database stored locally.  I have been looking at 1Password, does anybody have their thoughts on it?

Thanks.

Yeah I just feel more comfortable having the database locally.  I will only keep it on my desktop.  So if somebody breaks in my house and steals my desktop, I have other problems :P

Is KeePass on OS X as well?

KeePass has ports onto practically every platform. It will also run on OS X Natively via Mono.

I use 1Password and it is great, there is a major update for PC (v4) in beta at the mo, OSX is already v4.  Buying the PC licence now will give you the upgrade for free.  You can store the db locally but you lose the ability to sync with multiple devices, although you can sync 1P with iCloud if you wish.

One feature I do like on LastPass which isn't in 1P at the moment is the ability to see when a site has been hacked, +BudMan posted a screenshot of it in another thread not that I can find it now.  I made a feature request for it to be added with 1P and it's something they are keen to look into but no time frame I'm afraid.

But also keep print outs in a safety deposit box or something and also back them up onto a CD

LastPass is what I've been using for two years now.  Syncs in the cloud, but all data is encrypted locally, so even if the cloud service is hacked, all the bad guys get is a random blob of data.  If you're a mobile user, even better on Android as it now offers filling Apps as well as browser based items.  Very strong encryption, cross browser, cross platform, wonderful program.

Another vote for Keepass. I'm using it on Windows, Linux (via Mono) and Android. Works great!
