techishere
Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone else is affected by retiring of custom domains from Microsoft!? They are forcing everyone to get a subscription from Office 365, I have more than 7000 emails under 10 domains in domains.live.com now it doesn't allow me to add any accounts anymore. Today I purchased an Exchange subscription from Office 365 but I noticed that for each mailbox I have to pay ?3 a month. It's not fair, after 6 years using this service they are forcing people to pay for something which is not even close to the current service! Cheers

Cheers In short, a free service is being replaced by a paid service, primarily due to folks such as you rusing and abusing the free service. Ten domains is abuse - period. And then you wonder why the replacement service (such as it is) is structured the way that it is. It's three pounds British per month, and is not as wide open to rusal and abuse as the old service. Did you expect Microsoft UK to stay stupid forever? JJ_ 1 Share

First of all you can't just come here and accuse people of abusing a service which has been free for years. Secondly, this service allowed people to add unlimited number of domains, each domain gets maximum 150 mailboxes, unless you provide them with documents that you need more email address, that's what I did. Was it against the ToS? No it wasn't! The service is retiring.
Joe User
In short, a free service is being replaced by a paid service, primarily due to folks such as you rusing and abusing the free service. It's three pounds British per month, and is not as wide open to rusal and abuse as the old service. Did you expect Microsoft UK to stay stupid forever? To claim ten domains is abuse is silly - period. MS set up this service for vanity domains and very small companies that wanted free email while MS got to shower them with ads. Most of all, they did it because Google was doing it. When Google got out of the free domain hosting, it was just a matter of time before Microsoft would. Combine that with the fact that most people don't see the ads anymore thanks to Outlook and the outlook.com app. So MS started losing money for a service that no one else offered. It wasn't abuse that killed it, it was a lack of revenue and lack of competition. You can find cheaper hosting at other places, your ISP might even have hosting included. I had 5 domains that I ran, most of them with 2 addresses each and mostly for family members that wanted their own domain. techishere 1 Share
techishere
7000 emails under 10 domains? Were you running an enterprise under a Microsoft consumer product or something? No, 99% of it was through Open Membership I used to run a forum like this which allowed some of the user's create their account using some of my domains! now about 80% of them are active! Like what http://bink.nu did!
TAZMINATOR
The service is retiring. It is not retiring. They are changing their services to Office 365. If you don't like it, then cancel their service and find alternative email hosting service for your needs.

Like what http://bink.nu did! MS promoted the heck out of this service for open membership. They even created a web service interface for signups. Sorry to say, those days are over. techishere 1 Share
Aergan
I was using it for my MSDN membership (Exchange environment -> external email) and home/family emails which have now been migrated onto Outlook.com accounts.
TAZMINATOR
No, it's 100% retiring, Office 365 is another product. I got email from them and they didn't say about retiring... they are moving your account(s) to Office 365 if you are interested to keep going... otherwise cancel their service if you don't want to keep going with Office 365. That simple. They updated the terms. If you don't agree their terms then cancel their service.

They probably let you keep your current accounts but you won't be able to create new ones!

Yes it's sad that they don't have this service anymore... you need to go to Office 365 which is a nice service but not cost effective at all for what you were doing. You can keep what you have on the Live Domains, but as of July 31, you can't add more. techishere 1 Share

Tidosho
You must surely know by now that all free things usually come to an end, and plan accordingly for backups etc. If you wanted subdomain domains with email. you can easily set up a domain controller, point a domain to it, and use subdomains. I use kitamuracomputers.net, and have all sorts of subdomains on it for company projects, and they're free, I just set up A host records with 123Reg.com using their Advanced DNS options, point them to my server, and have DNS A Host records on the server itself, then have Apache VirtualHost containers set up for each subdomain. Email works the same way, and it's all fully under your control, no relying on external providers, and apart from the domain cost, and electricity bill, it works out cheaper! NEVER expect "free" external services to be around forever! It's a dumb move, especially in your case, all those domains and email accounts. You've got one hell of a migraine to get though, and I pity you for not planning. techishere 1 Share
