I've noticed that every time i want to open a new finder window, I have to hide the current application.

This is because the application takes over the taskbars functions. Is there anyway of accessing the default taskbar without exiting/hiding all your applications?

Thanks.

Click on the dock icon. Double-click launches the app, right-click gives you options depending on the application. In the case of the finder it gives you the option to open a new window.
