Hi guys.

I have a question.  I have no knowledge of "smartphone" what-so-ever.  I would like to ask a question before bricking my phone.

I am going to get Xperia Z1 and I know for a fact, once I get it, it will be running KitKat or a lessor version of Android OS.  Based on the hype lately brewing, all the Z-line will be allowed to update the firmware/OS.  The question is this.

If the phone was a "factory unlocked", if I update the OS, will it change that state to say - locked?  Will there be a chance I can brick the phone?  Is there a way to use a different icon set?  Will I degrade the audio or the camera quality?  This latter question is based on what I read from the customer review.  They complaint about the phone's poor quality of camera and audio and someone mention that when you unlocked the phone, it ruin the phone's original factory firmware causing the audio and video to degrade.  Is this true?

I do have a few more questions but atm, I am a bit stump on what to ask.  Will ask more if I can recall the questions.  Thanks.

No

No, to also the camera as you wouldn't need to unlock boot loader to get update OTA.

Basically no to everything except icon set you can change whatever you want on the phone.

Thanks.  What about the SIM contacts?  Do I need to remove the SIM or back-up anything while updating to Lollipop?

You can backup everything via backup app or sd card...

even phone store can do it for you if you are not able to transfer contacts/data over to the new phone.

Put all your contacts to your gmail account, no matter what happens you'll never lose them and can be transferred between multiple android devices.

Then remember when adding new contacts assign them to your gmail account.
