Zlain
So whenever my brother uses his PC, I can't play any game, I just get disconnects all the time and large lag spikes. My internet connection is quite low, but he is only watching iPlayer etc. I can stream fine its just the games I can't play. Is this a problem with my low broadband speed or is something else up? Nick H. Supervisor Posted October 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 26, 2014 What's your Internet connection speed? The lag could explain the disconnects, I guess. Do you get a particular error message in the game when you get disconnected? Normally they explain why they have removed you from the server. Nick H. Supervisor Posted October 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 26, 2014 Ok, but what is saying "disconnect"? The applications, or your network icon in the taskbar? What about if you're just browsing the Internet, do you have any issues then? How is your network set up? How about your router? Who is your service provider? There's not a whole lot of information to work with at the moment, hence the basic questions. Any more information you can provide would help us to help you. (Y) There is a message in-game saying "disconnected from server".. In other games, all other players around me just freeze and a few seconds later I find myself dead. The internet doesn't disconnect. I only get issues when playing games if my brother uses his PC. Outside of this, if I wanted to browse or stream, I never get an issue. Its only when playing games I lag TONS/ in-game server disconnects. Its all set up through plusnet and a technicolour router. I've assigned an IP address to my computer and to his. I've gone through each setting, disable/ enabling things one by one to see what it could be but to no avail.
Roger H. Veteran Posted October 26, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 26, 2014 Seems like upstream being starved. I'm guessing you have 512Kbps upstream? Showan 1 Share

As Nick have stated, those are some things to consider. 6mbps isn't much to work with, when multiple devices are jockeying for bandwith. Other things to consider, are either you or your brother on wifi with your devices.? What condition is your router and modem in?

Router is pretty new. Works fine for everything else seemingly. Pings quite low and consistent too. Both PC's are on wired connections. Seems like upstream being starved. I'm guessing you have 512Kbps upstream? I believe its closer to 1Mbs
Nick H. Supervisor Posted October 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 26, 2014 I believe its closer to 1MbsSpeed test, which I linked to above, would be able to give us a better idea rather than a guess: EDIT: It would also be an idea to run the test when your brother is streaming, just so we can see the possible differences. Zlain
This is the result whilst he is streaming and I'm trying to play a game: I'll try to get the result without his streaming later...
Showan
Ouch... .86 is ur culprit.. When online gaming, your upload is of the most importance. .86 isn't gonna cut it. Maybe you should see if your ISP offers a better package, if that's in your budget. Anibal P 1 Share
Nick H. Supervisor Posted October 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted October 26, 2014 This is the result whilst he is streaming and I'm trying to play a game:Oof, yeah the upload is probably a major cause. Interestingly, when I go to the Plusnet broadband only packages page I don't see an offer that would give those kind of speeds. I would contact your service provider and explain the problem to them, they'll probably have an upgrade offer for you for a reasonable price. offroadaaron
.86 isn't horrible in terms of ADSL. Through upload is more of an internet killer than download
Zlain
What sort of upload speeds would I need if say, two people were using the same internet connection to play games?

An_Englishman
Does it not look more like a bandwidth problem there? See if you're able to get fibre (FTTC) within your area.
