Gameplay

Lords of the Fallen follows very closely in the footsteps of the Souls series in that it?s a third-person action RPG that features a high risk-reward progression system. The game rewards learning enemy patterns, weapon move sets, timing, and exploration.

When you begin a new game, you select from three different styles of magic (Brawling, Deception, Solace) and three different equipment sets (Warrior, Rogue, Cleric) for a total of nine different classes. (Warrior, Outlaw, Brawler, Raider, Rogue, Executioner, Paladin, Ranger, Cleric) The combination you choose simply defines your starting attributes, items, and (first) school of magic. (In NG+ and NG++, you are allowed to select an additional school of magic, eventually unlocking everything for one character) Every character can use any weapon, piece of armor, or spell. So even if you pick a starting combination that you do not like, you can always adapt your character to a play style that you like.

Combat revolves around energy management, blocking, dodging, and being patient with your attacks. Magic consumes your magic energy, but provides extra damage, extra survivability, or utility. You also gain access to different Gauntlets that provide ranged magic damage such as projectiles and flame-throwing like attacks.

Each enemy slain gives you experience which you keep on your person as you play, and you can only use your experience at checkpoints. If you die you drop all of your unspent experience near where you died, and you must get back to your ghost in order to retrieve it.

Leveling Harkyn involves spending your accumulated experience points at a checkpoint, and purchasing either spell points or attribute points. Spell points are used to unlock new spells or strengthen ones you already have. Attribute points are spent on the game?s six attributes (Strength, Vitality, Faith, Endurance, Agility, and Luck) which gives you more health, energy, magic, and allows you to wield heavier gear.

Gear can be upgraded with runes to boost damage, survivability, or to provide status effects like poison or fire damage.

Unique Features:

I can hear you saying, ?That sounds exactly like the ?Souls? games. What makes this game different from Demon/Dark Souls??

Story Exposition

  • The story is told with traditional cutscenes and character dialogue opportunities.
  • Audio scrolls are hidden throughout the game, and they provide additional background lore. They can accessed at any time in the character menu.
  • Unlocking all audio scrolls of a particular ?set? unlocks additional lore related to that ?set?.

Experience Multiplier

  • Killing any enemy raises your based multiplier (it starts at 1.00) by a static amount.
  • Killing consecutive enemies continually increases this multiplier giving you more and more experience for each kill.
  • The multiplier is only reset if you use a checkpoint or die.

Item Find based on Experience

  • Your base item find is directly proportional to the amount of experience that you are ?carrying? on your character.
  • The more experience that you have that you haven?t banked at a checkpoint, the greater the chance enemies will drop items, upgrade materials, or equipment.

Combat ?Evolved? (pun intended!)

  • Timing subsequent attacks correctly will result in each of those attacks using less stamina than is typical for that type of attack and weapon. This allows you to attack move often in the same combo if you time everything correctly. This is especially true for dual-wield weapons like short swords, daggers, and fist weapons. A perfectly timed combo will result in massive damage.
  • Heavy attacks can be ?charged?. You can hold down the heavy attack button instead of tapping it to consume more stamina than normal for massive damage. This rewards proper timing as well since you are vulnerable while charging the attack.

Boss Challenges

  • Every boss in the game can drop a unique piece of equipment if you defeat it in a particular manner. These rewards cannot be attained any other way, and drops range from unique weapons to shields, and armor pieces.

Magic

Each school of magic gives the player access to four different spells unique to that school.

Brawling

Prayer: A motionless clone that attracts enemy attention to give Harkyn an advantage in combat. Restores some of your health over time.

Rage: A surrounding force that gives more damage, Attack Power and removes Energy restrictions.

Quake: Your most powerful ally, coming down to help you and slam your enemies with a giant hammer, wreaking havoc.

Ram: A powerful charging force that, apart from damaging, can stagger or knock down the enemies.

Deception

Prayer: A motionless clone that attracts enemy attention to give Harkyn an advantage in combat. Increases Energy recovery.

Mimic: A phase of magic following you, repeating your moves and dealing the damage you did, again.

Stab: A blood seeking supernatural assassin that sprints towards its prey to take life or damage severely.

Shift: Harkyn moves into Shadow dimension. Any attack he deals is devastating, but brings him back.

Solace

Prayer: A motionless clone that attracts enemy attention to give Harkyn an advantage in combat. Increases Magic recovery.

Shelter: A protective shell that highly increases all types of defenses and mirrors the incoming damage.

Daze: A powerful force that inflicts fear in the enemies, slowing them down and lowering defenses.

Punishment: Eye for an eye. Enemy attacks are being revenged by stunning the opponent.

Attributes

Strength: Affects not only the damage dealt with Strength based weapons but also slightly increases your ability to carry heavier gear.

Vitality: Determines the amount of your Health. It also has a slight effect on health potion effectiveness.

Faith: Increases the amount of Magic you can use with spells and the Gauntlet. It also boosts the damage of magical weapons.

Endurance: Affects the amount of Energy you have and significantly increases the ability to carry heavy gear.

Agility :Boosts the damage dealt with fast weapons, but also gives you a slight increase in Energy.

Luck: You will need more Luck to get better rewards for killing opponents, but it also helps you get better crafting materials.

Sounds interesting but I was never a fan of brutal hardcore-style games like the Souls games.....I wish demos were still a thing.

There is share play on the PS4 now, so you may be able to bum a "demo" off a friend...if you have a PS4.

Also, this game is MUCH easier than any of the 'Souls' games. I played a few hours last night, and while it was good fun, it was pretty easy. But then again, I've fully chieved all three games in the series (Dark Souls 3 times for each platform) so maybe my opinion is skewed a bit. I recommend trying it if you can.

GG for actually putting effort into an OT (Y) :p

Game looks great but I can't help but think LOTR everytime I see it. Definitely feels like a surprise sleeper hit of the year.

Now all I need is a friend to lend me a PS4 and I'll do that. :P

Unfortunately I'm strictly a PC gamer, Steam really needs to develop a demo system somehow that gives you access to a full game (or demo, if the developers make one available) for a couple hours played time (maybe like 2 hours played time or something).

Thanks. I hope it's good enough for an OT.

I played a couple hours last night, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm huge fan of the 'Souls' games, so this game is right up my alley. It's a bit easier, but it definitely scratches that itch. It's certainly my favorite new game of the year so far. (It would have been Destiny, but we all know how that turned out.)

Yeah, I debated getting PC version but I wasn't sure if I could play it at an acceptable state. So I went with the PS4 version. Doesn't Steam have library sharing of some sort? If I end up buying the game on Steam during a sale, I'll let you know!

This game looks great to me.  I never got around to playing either Dark Souls game but I've heard great things about them.  Now that the "next-gen" is here this looks like a good game to wet my feet in this style of game.  I know Bloodborne is supposed to be the "next-gen" spiritual successor but I'm just not that into the Victorian-like setting and would much rather play a more standard fantasy based one such as this.  Also having never played these games "easier" sounds like a good introduction to the genre to me, rofl.  If I breeze through it but generally enjoy the play style I can always go back and pick up the older/harder games.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, after finally beating the game with each class, I feel I've definitely gotten my monies worth. Except for a few crashes on the PS4, it was surprisingly great throughout. My first play-through was a around 14 hours, and I believe I found everything. Subsequent play-throughs were must quicker, but it was definitely fun going through as other classes. It's one of things I really like about the game. Playing as a warrior in heavy armor and a giant weapon felt radically different than playing as a Rogue in light armor and daggers. And both were equally fun. It certainly wasn't as hard as any of the Souls games, but it was still challenging.

I'm kind of disappointed at the lack of attention this game is getting, especially with all of the nonsense related to Unity, MCC, and other AAA games as of late. This game is a solid action RPG that was genuinely fun. Hopefully the sales numbers are enough to get us a sequel.

I have my copy sitting here unopened, and there it shall stay until I finish DA:I, Alien, and Rogue (also need to finish my plat for Mordor).

I can understand that. I am basically doing the same in the opposite order. I'll be starting Mordor next. (Y)
