Dell UP2715K 27" 5K Monitor

Recommended Posts

so tech makers are already developing 4k phone screen sizes... which will have a reasonable cost (otherwise it will never sell)  yet they cannot make a 5k desktop monitor at reasonable price?

Apple has 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display. You get a 5K display and a complete computer? for $2,500.

Apple might have a bigger volume and can get better price on parts, but it is never known to release a cheap product. so i think DELLs price is bullcrap.

Little on the expensive side, but that's what you get for trying to stay ahead of the curve. I think the 27" iMac 5K uses Dell panels from what I have read on a review site.

It's just a shame that no gaming rig could handle that resolution, making it useless as an everyday monitor. This really is only for production use.

if i want to game at 5k, i want it to be on at least 60"  tv.... or better even bigger.

27" is way to small.

yeah, this monitor is purely professional. no way it is needed or wanted for anyone who likes to game.

speaking with my Dell channel rep it is a single panel - no idea if its the same panel as the iMac but it will require dual DP 1.2 connections to drive it.

Dell and Apple have both traditionally used LG panels for their high end monitors so you would think the same is true again. The only difference being the Dell has an anti-glare coating and the Apple has a gloss coating.

I think the capacity to game at that res is there its just not affordable for most people, linustech recently setup an eyefinity rig with 3x LG 3495's, that works out to be 10K something x 1400~ fron the brief look, seemed quite capable so the same setup would run the dell.

I agree on the price although its just time, over time

1) Dell will release non premium panel versions which are usually several hundred dollars less, sometimes half the cost

2) The cheap monitor industry is taking off pretty well, the AoC monitors etc seem to be filling a hole for consumers pretty well and those guys are getting into ultra wide and 4K displays, these too are usually 1/2 the cost.

So besides the usual decreases in price over time due to better production methods and increased scale, you have 2 additional mechanisms which should put these into the more realistic realms of consumer affordability.

Dell has said this monitor is going to be dropped to $2000 in December. Probably because of the new iMac which is a whole computer for $2500. The iMac doesn't have the ability to work as a monitor though so once the hardware inside is obsolete you can't use your expensive screen with something better.

$2700 less a $1 and 12/29/2014 is est. ship date.

"less a $1"?  You forgot that 1 more penny make that screen $2,700.

I had to read that over and over trying to figure out what you meant.  Took me a while.

So the new iMac doesn't support this? Oh nvm, I read mid 2012 and later but they actually put a note below the table that says the 5K is excluded.

Why do I feel a god damn resolution war brewing? Isn't there a point at which the PPI is high enough that exceeding it is indistinguishable to the human eye? Especially if you take into account the distance a person sits from their monitor.
