How to pronounce "Israel"?

Recommended Posts

When you want the proper English pronunciation go with the English (British) version, not US.

Yes. IF you're in Britain. Speak the British version in the U.S. and you'll look equally foolish as using the American version there.

And most Americans do NOT pronounce the words given here the way the Brits seem to think we do.

what the hell did you use to look it up?    i just googled NIPON, and i got 2 pages of results with different people with this last name, and a few companies

(also with first line being a suggestion to search for nippon instead)

bing gives even more varied results too. again, nothing related to porn, and a lot of nippon suggestions.

it is very very strange that you get japanese porn instead.   do you search for a lot of porn in search engines???

I don't know, aren't there a lot of ultra-religious Christians in Texas? Israel is probably one of the only other countries on the planet they care about enough to know what and where it is.

I've always pronounced it Is-rail. Is-reel doesn't sound right somehow.

German words get the worst treatment, I think.

Porsche, Braun, Neanderthal, Deutsche, & Adidas are the ones that cop it the worst.

Porsche -> porsch

Braun -> brawn

Neanderthal ->neanderthall

Deutsche -> doytsch

Adidas -> adeedus

It should be:

Porsche -> Por-scha

Braun -> brown

Neanderthal -> nay-ander-tall

Deutsche -> doytsch-a

Adidas -> adi-das

Actually - what it is - for the most part, any country in the Middle East - is terrorists, plain and simple.

It is the southern tip of the Bible Belt, but that mainly pertains to Southern Baptists (or Shiite Baptists what I call them)

You also have a lot of the Fox News watching 24/7 group of right-wing conservs who love war and love it when the news talks about killing some people in the middle east --- you know... cause god needs to weed them out :rolleyes:

Of course, not all are like this, and I would say most arent like this - but there is enough of them like this to support a stereotype - and there is ALWAYS truth in every stereotype.

So, me being an atheist, well I'm just a godless heathen to them.

Rather a broad brush stoke your using there T3xas many are merely defending their homeland but well not go in to that.Besides if you go back far enough in UK history you'll come across the Crusades a Church led massacre of thousands which is hardly the best reflection of out character

As a Brit, same. "Is Rail". Except as a Brit "Is" is pronounced more as "Iz".

With the BBC Plum in the mouth or without :D

No No - you got me all wrong.

I dont think like them, I am simply stating what many down here think/feel.  You get outside of the main Dallas/Ft. Worth area (called The Metroplex) and the IQ drops to something around a bowl of dog snot.

I was making fun of a particular group that you see a lot of down here.  Not what I feel/think  (other than the Shiite Baptist comment)

The crusades? Or demonising African healers and using smear words like 'voodoo'? By any chance?

Well to me anyway,it seems such a repeat of what the Christians did to their countrymen during the sixteenth century

OK, this is getting way off-subject...

to re-phrase my original question: if we all agree it's is-ray-ell, why do people like Sinatra and Michael Buble sing it as is-rye-ell?
