Neyht Member Posted December 28, 2014 Member Share Posted December 28, 2014 I think you've read a little too far into what they said, however, I think they are trying to report on a story they have absolutely no info on. TechJunkie81
FOX not News is an entertainment channel. They said so themselves. They are not reporting news. Why people think they do just shows how most Americans really are out to lunch without a clue. It's NOT news. Nothing from the Rupert Murdoch entertainment empire is. Rippleman
After watching it, I don't think the blonde made the connection between metric and the crash. I feel she was asking if anything, no matter how small, could have contributed. By the way... I dislike Fox and wish I could fault them for this but I just don't see it. bguy_1986 1 Share

Ryoken
I agree with FOX, the Metric system is very dangerous.. that's why That's why no one really uses it.. apart from almost every other nation in the world, almost all science, oh and the US Military. DocM
^ bingo, and they're more entertaining than MSNBC (too angry) and CNN (too dull) - which gets them the ratings. Generally, if you want real US national political news with in depth coverage and interviews watch C-SPAN or read its website. If you want breaking news read the major news service feeds online, or the local (to the event) papers & local news websites.
Arachno 1D
Assumptions made on lack of evidence so just a typical 24/7 media report EDIT and the reference to him being an Former AAA Official is misleading as he was the AAA chief spokesman which lends me at least to assume a less than technical roll in airplane technology and training. http://www.gephardtdc.com/bios/gga_bio_sbrenner.pdf

+sphbecker MVC Posted December 29, 2014 MVC Share Posted December 29, 2014 While I agree there was no meaningful information covered in the video, I don't think the question about metric vs imperial measurements was invalid. Who can honestly say they have never made a mistake converting it in their head? I really wish the US would push to move everything to metric. PsYcHoKiLLa
Fox hosts are amazing, religious leaders, political analysts, great thinkers and now crash investigators. Get them off the TV! They're needed elsewhere, yeah, they'll believe that, try that..
+E.Worm Jimmy Subscriber¹ Posted December 29, 2014 Subscriber¹ Share Posted December 29, 2014 Nothing to do with this plane, but... Seriously. Metric is the only way. I worked in home renovation industry in Canada, and it is just terrible: The stores have 50/50 mix of metric VS imperial. Just because of most exports come from USA. It is impossible to know in advance which is going to be used. Totally inconsistent. Same with food products. What a mess. You never know if you are going to find Oz or Liters. Kg or Pounds.... What crap is that! It gets harder and harder for USA to switch... now it is almost impossible.... so they are stuck, using an antiqued system, that makes measurements unnecessary complicated. what did the fox say ... Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow! Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow! Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow! Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho! Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho! Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho!

Cause the rest of the world uses Metric by default. Also the issue isn't that she raised it once, it's that she raised it, was told no, then continued to talk about it. DocM
OMG, how stupid are you people? It was a perfectly valaid question with aerospace precident known an experienced US reporter. In 1999 the US lost the Mars Climate Orbiter due to a metric/imperial units oopsie. A ground-based computer used a thrust command expressed in pound-seconds instead of newton-seconds, causing MCO to burn up in Mars' atmosphere. Scandal ensued, and the news media's institutional memory is long. Not to mention that MCO hasn't been the only units based oopsie. Automakers using both metric and imperial fasteners in the same vehicle, Air Canada Flight 143 running out of fuel, problems at Disney Tokyo etc. etc.
neufuse Veteran Posted December 29, 2014 Veteran Share Posted December 29, 2014 I thought pilots world wide used Knots and Nautical Miles for their measurements?
DocM
In Air Canada's case it was the ground crew using the wrong units for fuel density when calculating the fuel load. The gauge had failed and the pilots had a WTF? moment.
xpablo
The entire world uses the Metric system as their main measurement system, except Three Countries Liberia, Myanmar and the USA. The Metric system is more accurate and easier to use than the standard system, even NASA uses Metric on space flights, you would think all airlines in the world including the USA would use Metric also. That idiot on Fox is a "Former FAA" official, who has probably no clue about airlines outside of the USA.
+sphbecker MVC Posted December 29, 2014 MVC Share Posted December 29, 2014 That would only be an issue if the Pilots fly in the US. Cause the rest of the world uses Metric by default. Also the issue isn't that she raised it once, it's that she raised it, was told no, then continued to talk about it. You must have seen a different video than the rest of us. She used Celsius and Fahrenheit as an analogy of two different ways to do the same thing, the response was "Correct." She only brought it up again to point out that she was wrong, which I applaud, better than moving on and pretending it didn't happen. I dislike Fox News as much as the next guy, but if you are going to bash someone, at least do it correctly. For example, the "subject matter expert" they were interviewing's only claim to fame is that he once worked for the FAA. Big freaking deal! Also, in the nearly 5 minutes they didn't bring in a single shred of information other than some nobody's opinion that US has better trained pilots. The entire thing was a joke, but not because of the metric/imperial comparison.
