Metal Gear Solid 5 - mission progresses without me doing anything

I just purchase Metal gear solid 5, I left the game alone for about 10 minutes to cook and when I returned the mission had progressed. Now I wanted to beat this mission without any help from the game, however it turns out me just waiting and doing nothing will progress the game, I experienced this before a long time ago on the PS3. Perhaps this is just the design of the game however if its possible to remove in the settings please let me know how. Its not considered Relax mode is it? I just turned it off in case it was.

Pause the game. The iDroid menu doesn't pause the game.
