google play Cannot use Google Play to buy hardware on Google Play !!!

Ok so I was looking at getting a new Chromecast so had a look on Googles Play store and they have them for £30 but they want to store your card details so I didn't want that. So looking at the checkout they have an option to pay with Google Play accounts. So off I go to Sainburys to get 3 x £10 Play cards and add them to my account. Then off to pay......

 Long story short, despite being an option on the store having spoken to Google on the phone they say you cannot buy hardware with Play credits and I cannot return the cards as they have been used. They have escalated but really how stupid.

It's always been that way.  I think it's the same for Apple.

Apple has specific gift cards for hardware.
