Well, now movies are all digitally graded - that is, they go Camera (Panavison, usually) -> Digital Telecine -> Digital Grading S/W -> Reverse Digital Telecine (term?) -> Projecting Film.

Not sure 'bout the resolution, tho.

A standard movie has a ratio of 1.85:1. More recent movies, in CinemaScope or Panavision films are even wider at 2.35:1. Widescreen TVs use a ratio of 1.77:1 (more typicaly known as 16:9), this is why even the most recent movies are still letter boxed on a widescreen TV.

More and more editing is done on computers now, especialy when handling CG characters such as in Star Wars or The Matrix. This means the film is imported digitaly, then edited, then exported back onto film. The favourite tool of digital editing is a Mac with FinalCut Pro and/or some custom made software.

the software and equipment is probably out of the price range of a private film maker/fun movie maker, i would just use a good DV camera and maybe if you can afford it adobe premier and after effects, or if on a mac the excellent tools that are available for the mac world, in fact if you are serious enough to spend i would go with mac when making or editing etc. most pro's use mac :)
