vhs to pc to dvd ?

Recommended Posts

ok so i have an old video tape of a commercial i did for rip magazine.. does anybody remember rip magazine???

it was back in 1986, i did it with lita ford.

anyways i can hook my vcr up to my computer using my hauppage tv card and i can capture the video and sound just fine. the only thing is that the video is 1.5 gb. this is fine for transfering it to dvd.. i will do this no problem..

but i want to put it on my website so people can see it and laugh at me.. but it is way to big.. so what is the best way to make this smaller so i can put it on line and then give all you people a link to see it..

without loosing the quality.. to much, if possible.. its only 30 seconds..

thanks

Be warned that if you convert VHS to DVD you'll lose quality. With that fun advice said you should also be aware of Canopus boxes. These boxes instantly clean, stabilize and preserves old VHS and Hi8 videos in clean DV format. The cost differs with each model, but if you have a lot or plan on doing this on more than one occasion you'll be pleased. Below is a link to one of the several models of Canopus boxes, but for 30 seconds it might be overkill:

What OS are you using? If XP, you can use Windows Movie Maker to edit/convert your video.

the quality of the xp movie maker is so bad i just cant take it. but it does make it a small file.

if i make it into a divx file then not everyone online can see it unless they have the divx codec installed, and i dont want that.

i cant sift through all the crap on that site. but thanks for pointing me there again and again..

i dont know what im even looking for on that site.. all i know is that i want to put a 30 second video on the web...

You can customize/adjust the quality of the video. You can get nearly the same result as encoding it in Divx.

Okay... if godrian knot is too much u can prolly use one the pieces of software which comes with it - it's called Virtualdub and it's located in your start menu - progs - gordian knot folder. Open ur video file in it. Go to the Video Menu, then click compression and select the codec you would like. Then save it! for 30 secs of video it should be fine in MPEG4.

Yeah, I'm wondering about Windows Movie Maker too. I have an NVidia GeForce4 Ti4200 with VIVO, and Windows Movie Maker imports the stuff decently. I can't get virtualdub or virtualvcr to cooperate with me at all. Can you actually do anything with the Movie Maker format, like convert to something else so it can be used to make VCDs, or anything? Or has anyone had any experience capturing with a Ti4200 that would like to share any secrets....I'm having no luck whatsoever, and I would rather use something besides WMM. Thanks.

Something I noticed with Virtual VCR is that when I capture video and audio, the audio is at the regular speed, while the video is extremely fast and out of sync. I'm recording at 29-30 fps, and using either HuffyUV or Morgan MJPEG (usually Morgan) compression codecs. Any ideas why this happens?
