why is it when i'm trying to search, a word has to be over 4 letters long.

just a suggestion, but wouldn't it make more sense to shorten it to like 2?

like when a person is searching for "tweak xp" it won't search because xp is not 4 letters, or msn explorer, it won't search because msn is not 4 letters.

If you ran a search on xp just think how many thousands of entries your search would turn up. :p Would you really want to sift through all those?

I think a four character limit is realistic.

just curious :)

as for me though, i'd enjoy sifting through them all, hahahaha at least then i'd learn something and not have to post a group of messages each day on how to do something new. :p

It's not really because of the many entries that would turn up, it's because having a 3 or 2 character search would make the search database much larger.

I suppose the minimum could be decreased to 3, but then the maximum would have to be reduced to xx. :D

Redmak should know, but it could be hard to do. :ermm:

i can be done lower, or higher in fact too (there is a 10 character max too, did you know that? :D )

The simple reason is the way the search database is made up. Rather than hunting through our post table with a LIKE, vB does things differently.

You have two tables. One with every word on the site, each with it's own id, then there is another table that contains a list of which words are in which posts. So, vB just looks up a words id, then does a SELECT postid FROM searchindex WHERE wordid=[insert your search word id here]. So, the more words you have, the larger and more complex the database becomes and the more space we take up and the longer your searches become, etc etc...

So, I hope that sheds some light on the situation...
