Mass. Church push same sex-union vote

BOSTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Churches in Massachusetts plan a drive to put a gay marriage referendum on the ballot in 2008, kicking it off on "Protect Marriage Sunday."

Because of a state Supreme Court ruling last year, Massachusetts is now the only state in the country where same-sex marriages are legal. Oct. 2 has been designated "Protect Marriage Sunday," the Boston Globe reported, although some churches plan to jump the gun.

To get the measure on the ballot, the coalition must gather at least 66,000 valid signatures by Thanksgiving and is shooting for 120,000. At the same time, the Religious Coalition for Freedom to Marry is trying to undermine the drive.

The state's four Catholic bishops all support the petition drive and have sent letters to their dioceses urging parishioners to sign and gather signatures.

"As faithful citizens, we have a moral obligation to defend the truth, no matter how counter-cultural or unappreciated our convictions might be," Bishop George W. Coleman of Fall River wrote in a Sept. 12 letter.

i'm not sure how pragmatic such a maxim is, regardless of one's position, if the apprehended truth is fallible. :/

and no one should force churches to marry certain people, but no one should deny those people the right to marry.
