Good Guys to close

By Blanca Torres

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

CompUSA announced it is closing all 46 Good Guys stores. Dallas-based CompUSA bought the home entertainment store chain, formerly based in Alameda, in 2003 and had announced some closures in August, citing market pressures and a sagging market for home electronics.

"As home entertainment products become more prevalent among consumers, the need for stand-alone high-end home entertainment retailers is declining," said Larry Mondry, president and CEO of CompUSA in a written statement. "As a result, we made the decision to close all Good Guys locations."

All Good Guys locations are expected to close within two months. Some stores are shutting their doors immediately while others will stay open to liquidate inventory at reduced prices.

Last June, CompUSA announced plans to create combination CompUSA and Good Guys stores that would sell home entertainment and computer products in one location to compete with other retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

CompUSA will continue to use that model, but will drop the Good Guys name. A company spokesperson said stores in California and Hawaii will convert about 10 to 20 percent of inventories to home entertainment products.
