OrangeSoul
PARIS - The parent of Europe's Airbus approved plans Thursday to proceed with the new Airbus A350 plane, which is designed to rival Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner. The industrial launch of the A350 program had initially been planned earlier this year. Airbus said in June that a trans-Atlantic trade dispute over aircraft subsidies had delayed the decision. European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., which owns 80 percent of Airbus, announced the industrial launch of the mid-sized jet in a statement issued following a board meeting in Amsterdam. "With the official industrial launch of the A350, Airbus will now be able to book firm orders and expects around 200 of these by the end of the year," EADS said. Airbus has designed the A350 to compete with Boeing's fuel-efficient, long-range 787, and hopes to begin deliveries in 2010, two years behind the Boeing plane. European Union and U.S. negotiators are trying to work out a settlement to the dispute, which began last year when Washington tore up a 1992 pact on aircraft subsidies and filed a World Trade Organization complaint against EU government aid to Airbus. Brussels retaliated in a countersuit citing tax breaks and research and development subsidies to Chicago-based Boeing and its suppliers, including Japanese companies working on the Dreamliner program. Rolls-Royce Group PLC said Thursday it had reached a deal with Airbus to supply engines for the A350. Its new Trent 1700 engine will be available for deliveries from mid-2011, the company said. Airbus plans to begin commercial deliveries of the A350 in 2010 with engines first developed for the Dreamliner by Engine Alliance, a joint venture between General Electric Co. and United Technologies Corp.'s Pratt & Whitney. Britain's BAE Systems PLC owns the remaining 20 percent of Toulouse, France-based Airbus. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051006/ap_on_bi_ge/airbus_a350

klop
I dont think so. The biggest passenger aircraft in service is the 747 and it can carry up to 568 passengers max. And the maximum of seats for the A380 would be 840. We are not even close to 1000... Imagine 5000 !!

Jexel
Haha, Boeing is like Intel whilst Airbus is like AMD. There are like binary oppositions in everything. I've yet to ride on an Airbus, hoping to get a ride on the double decker airbus next year.

Airbus is not testing A380 plane that can hold up to 800 people but airliners plan to put around 555 people in it ( seats). Other space will got to bars, gyms, etc... 98XT
There wil be no gyms, salons, shops aboard these aircraft. These don't generate revenue. It will probably be 555 in a 3-class config, up to 800 in a Y-class, short-haul config for A380. A350 is replacement to A330 fleet. Same aircraft(ish), new technologies. Why seat thirty revenue paying passengers when you can have a hair salon? Makes perfect sense. (Y) I have my BSc Computer Science (Imperial), MSc Aviation Transport Management (Loughborough), Team Leader UPSCO Flight Operations (Europe Region). But then I guess the media speculation must be right. All hail CNN.
