Anybody have any ideas for the widgets/gadgets for Windows Vista's sidebar?

My one idea would be to have some sort of mini-windows explorer in the sidebar, so I wouldn't always have to open Explorer to get a file I want to use. So it would just have My Computer collapsable and then show to the right whatever is in the currently selected folder.

Any other ideas?

Idea: Drag an image to an ImageShack gadget and it'll automatically process the image and then display the corresponding URLs/tags...all with just a drag-and-drop move.

should be possible...Imageshack already has a widget for OSX to do this...hopefully they, or someone else, will develop a Gadget for it too.

widgets..! WIDGETS!!

that word is fun to say.

I like the idea of dragging windows onto the sidebar to make a thumbnail of them. I think that would be really handy and useful.

I think there should be some way of creating a widget. Like some kind of wizard. What it does is you decide if you want to new widget to be just a shortcut to something else or any of several other types (to be worked out later in development...maybe special windows to media center? DVD player?). The user can select what he/she wants the widget to look like, any launch options, sounds, etc. Perhaps one of these custom widgets is some kind of a carousel or sub-desktop that holds a bunch of icons. You could have a digital photo one, a games on, an Office one.......

System and network monitoring:

Total and available space on all disks/partitions.

CPU load + history.

Memory load.

Network:

Public IP address.

Local IP address.

Gateway and DNS IP's etc.

Upload and download speeds.

Total upload and download.

Haven't tried Rainmeter on Vista yet, but that's what I use on XP and I can't live without it anymore.

they do have gadgets for cpu and dual core and even memory

but I would like a gadget that lets you browse all the devices on the network and see a picture(icon) of the servers and printers and nas and other network share devices plus what ports are used on the router/hub/switch

How about

- a better looking weather gadget hehe :D

- media player song/album track information that's currently playing, etc

(For some reasons those gadgets listed on the website (the one that you go to from the sidebar) doesn't work on me - just blank screens..)

- Alarm reminders->maybe a clock that shakes and rings when a reminder occurs :)

    • I'd say the first one failed to be as popular as Apple anticipated, but the easy adjustment here is to make fewer of them next time around. It would only be a "flop" if it isn't possible for Apple to recover the design and factory tooling costs given the number of units sold, which I doubt would be the case. It isn't like no one bought them; it just failed to become the new hot phone of the year.
    • You're right that it does not follow the plain meaning of the word, but in this context, it is a legal term defined in 49 U.S.C. Kind of how "wire fraud" laws apply even if a physical wire was not used. Given that it is codified in law, and it isn't just automotive journalists that don't understand evolving technology, I highly doubt congress would change a well understood term just because technology makes the term slightly less actuate.
    • This is exactly why I keep saying we are not ready for human free self-driving. These little "bugs" are may seem like random one-offs. There was also the Waymo that drove between police with drawn weapons and the suspect they were pointing them at. From a software perspective it is easy to understand how those extremely rare situations may not have been programed for, but that is the point. If AI needs to be told to watch out for every possible contingency, then it can never be successful. There will always be the possibility of a first encounter that the AI needs to understand to avoid.
