CliffyB on UT2003 Bonus Pack

Recommended Posts

Cliffy B. from Epic Games stopped by the CPL Event this afternoon to give those in attendence an update on the Unreal franchise and what we can all expect to see from it in the future. The biggest Unreal event has been the debut of Unreal II, which can be played at the PNY / NVIDIA booth. Unreal II contains the same fantastic graphics as we've seen in Unreal Tournament 2003, but weaves them together into a tight storyline. Unlike in the original Unreal, Unreal II is more akin to Halo, with lots of constant interaction with allies, enemies and the environment. Gamers can also expect more of a plot this time out, rather than just journeying through a vast alien world with no real clues as to what's happening or why.

Unreal II is currently working its way through the release candidate process and is expected to go gold any day now. Gamers should see it on store shelves sometime in February 2003, and you can find the best preorder prices here.

Cliff also let us in on what we can expect to see as part of the Unreal Tournament 2003 Bonus Pack 1 (note - Cliff was quick to mention that this does not mean there will be a Bonus Pack 2). In the first Bonus Pack, gamers can expect to see three new game types, three new announcers (one "god"-like male, with a deep voice; one female voice; and one very seductive female voice), nine new maps which are designed for a good mid-range of players, the ability to add your own MP3 music to the game, and a load of new textures.

Lastly as a bit of an inside joke, Cliff told us of the placebo patch effect - where a number of gamers thought that Epic modified the weapons in the first Unreal Tournament 2003 patch, when in reality, they weren't changed at all.
