Macintosh newbie!

Greeting from my new iBook! I'm a long time Windows users and I must say OS X is awesome! Anyone have essential software and/or hardware recommendations? My first thing will have to be some kind of mouse for when I use this at home (alot).

a mouse is probably a definate item. most people shun apple mice because they aren't very practical it seems. just stick with whatever mouse you like best. if you have a bluetooth enabled cell phone, you might want to buy the little $50 usb adapter that d-link makes for macs. that was you can use iSync beta or whatever and have your address book up to date and do other neat things with your cellphone.

as for software, there are a few threads in this forum already which answer that question.

What about a DVD player? I tossed in Star Trek First Contact and it didn't play very smooth. It seems whatever player it was doesn't support hardware acceleration or this notebook can't handle it great. Any thoughts on this?

Welcome to the Neowin Mac Community!

About your DVD Comment...I've never once had any problems playing DVD's using the default software install from Apple and I don't know if there is even an external program to play them on the Mac...

I'd check to see if I had any other programs running in the BG and if not, then it may be an issue with the configuration of the iBook's software. :)

Run though your settings a few times and just make sure you have everything setup properly. :)

Hope that helps,

I just want to mention that I just got 512 mbs of RAM for christmas (we get presents on christmas eve instead of christmas day over here). Now everything flies :D

I would've bought it myself but I didn't have the money..

I guess that was a little off-topic, but RAM might be a good idea to get for your iBook :)

hehe we open presents on xmas eve too. but yeah it probably has to do with ram. i'm assuming you're using the default 128mb of ram for that iBook of yours? i suggest you buy more. that's probably the biggest and most frequent suggestion i have seen given by mac users.

First thing your iBook needs is at least 256MB of RAM, 512 is nice. Mac OS X just does not play nice on 128. I assume that you took advantage of the double your RAM promotion, so yo should already have 256 or more.

Your resource for all Macintosh software is http://www.versiontracker.com

Get a case for your iBook. I like the GoInCase cases, but that's just me.

Download a free copy of Chimera. Internet Explorer is nice, Chimera is AWESOME!

A lot of this is in those guides that were pointed out. Read through those and you'll be set!

I bought a 256MB model and did the double memory deal and got 640MB RAM. Nice deal! Incidentally, I tried the DVD again and it was fine, go figure.
