How to edit .mts video format?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have a Sony High-Def camera and well I should have known better than to think that Sony would have their files in normal format instead of Sony proprietary stuff... So I've shot all this video that I need to edit for work but I can't seem to find any editing software that can do it except for Sony Vegas which now the trial version is over and I don't want to buy it. Are there any other video alternatives (preferably free or relatively inexspensive) that can edit .mts video format? Or is there a way I can convert it to something else to use in another porgram?

We are in luck. I was stuck with the same issue wanting to burn my movies from my new Canon Vixia HF100 to DVD. The software that came with the camera was a piece of crap to put it mildly. Kept crashing every time I tried to import the files into a project.

So, I figured out that the MTS or M2TS format is the equivalent of h.264 or MPEG-4 AVC. It is a fairly new High Definition codec that provides greater compression than the regular MP4 and others. So I did some searching and experimenting and I found an application called ConvertXtoDVD that will do the trick. The trick is that you have to modify the extension on the saved files to .m2ts in order for it to recognize and import the files into a project.

Since I had a ton of video files to convert, I found a batch renaming program that could convert the file extension on all the files in the folder quickly so I didn't have to click each one to edit and paste.

Found the software here...

If you have any codec package installed, ffdshow and haali usually cause the crashes.

I have recently acquired a Cannon HF10 camera and my disappointment with the bundled software was palpable. It crashed, hung, was incomprehensible and produced terrible quality files. As a programmer necessity seems to always be the mother of invention. I have started writing a piece of software I call MTShandler.exe. It allows you to navigate your chips and harddrive for MTS files and play them or copy them to a new location. I have also perused the Internet looking for software to re encode the MTS files and have downloaded and started testing on several programs. I have relied upon TMPGenc.exe for many years for doing my video work and my goal is to be able to get the MTS files to go there. I am preparing a text file for my web site where I will soon post material covering my experience and source code in C# for handling MTS files.

I have a Sony HDR-SR10. I edit all my footage in Sony Vegas Pro 8. Yes, it's sony's app. If you want to preview the content without Vegas, you can use K-Lite Codec Package Full w/Media Player Classic. It's not smooth cause of the High Def content but it definitely works.

I tried the K-Lite w/MPC and it was to jerky for my use. My new player MTShandler.exe produces a much more pleasing rendering of MTS. It uses the C# axmediaplayer and I imagine some codec I have installed. I have so many codecs installed I never know which one is being used.

I have a Canon HF-100 and use TMPGEnc 4 Xpress along with the K-Lite codec pack and I can edit/convert files no problem. My machines can't handle the raw 1080p, not to mention the immense size (8gb per 1 hr) so I convert them to 720p hd-wmv files from within.

    • Stop reporting AR glasses as an X inch screen, Y distance away. That is a horseshit meaningless spec. Report on the actual FOV angle. That's all that matters. And for the record, this FOV is ~49degrees. So we're talking about HoloLens level FOV... i.e. it's like looking through a piece of paper at arm's length.
