Toms Hardware Reviews Standalone DivX Player

Recommended Posts

Thought this was interesting, and when I didn't see it here I thought I would share.

http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer/20030...0124/index.html

Now, the first standalone player to allow videos and movies to be played in DivX format (MPEG-4) and output to TV or projector is available. Until now, it was always necessary to use a PC that allowed playback in conjunction with a software codec (DivX 3.x to 5.x). Since the bulk of users still view movies and videos on a conventional TV set rather than sitting in front of a flat screen or a monitor, the introduction of the KiSS DP-450 is a giant leap forward.

theres a really nice review about this and it also alows for upgrades.

check it out

At least DivX is gaining more popular support as a legit codec. I'm glad to see they've dropped most of their previous stigma.

Still, I'd rather use a mini-PC for this purpose. More open ended and there are some nice setups available for linux that emulate Windows XP:MCE or do more :)

I just use my Xbox to do this and more ;).

The XBMP is a great piece of software, picture and sound quality is great, subtitle suport could be better but at least it's there. Here's a snipet from the xbox media player readme:

"The current release of XBMP2 has the following features:

-DivX playback (3.x/4/5 codec?s)

-XVID Support

-MP3 playback

-OGG/OGM Support

-Windows Media Files (WMA/WMV/ASF)

-Playlists

-AC3 audio tracks support (real AC3 Output)

-VCD/SVCD Support (MPG1 and MPG2)

-Subtitle support (Subrip SRT format)

-File streaming over a network

-Post-Processing filters for better picture quality

-ISO9660 Compatibility

-VOB Playback

-Stream files directly from ISO/BIN/IMG/ZIP files!!

and many more."

Like it said "many more");)

Not offhand, and I'm sure it wouldn't be free. MythTV is probably the best. I'm seriously thinking about buying a small, cheap, mini-pc for that program :)

you also spent $200 + the mod chip to be able to do that to.

Not everybody wants or needs an Xbox

a mini-pc is probably the best way to go, it has so much more usability.. it functions as a Complete Video player (including DivX and any other standard that you can play on your PC), it also functions as a VDR (like a Tivo, ReplayTV, etc..). All you would need is a decent video card to do all this (w/ TV out & Tv Tuner support, of course)..

But for just watching DivX movies, I wouldn't mind a device like this.. makes it a lot easier, especially since I got a lot of DivX i would like to watch on the big screen and not hookup my PC to it. That's an interesting article.. I would wait for the next generation standalone DivX players though..
