Feds Spying on Cable Modem Users
The U.S. government has already begun using expanded powers granted by the USA Patriot Act designed to help foil terrorism to get information about cable modem users that would previously have required a court order.
The Patriot Act changed a former law which stated "a cable operator shall not disclose personally identifiable information concerning any subscriber." Now such information must be released to government agencies.
The government is also using the Patriot Act to obtain logs from ISPs which would normally be out of their jurisdiction. The Senate has called a hearing to determine if these powers are being misused.
