Slimy
AV-Comparatives is known for the thorough tests it does on security software. Following its October 2008 performance report, the company has released its November 2008 retrospective report. 16 products were tested against new and unique samples received between August 4-31, split into one and four week periods. The company also took false positives into account and then rated the security companies from best to worst: Advanced+: ESET NOD32 Advanced: AVIRA, Kaspersky, Microsoft, Symantec, McAfee, GDATA Standard: TrustPort, BitDefender, AVG, Avast, Norman, VBA32 No Certification: Sophos, F-Secure, eScan Full Story: One Microsoft Way Not exactly breaking news, but I'm interested in seeing what people at Neowin think since I learned most of the things I know about security here. tsupersonic
Loved Nod32, but I got rid of it. I don't need the sense of security, I haven't ever gotten a virus and hopefully it will be that way.
Lannister
Still waiting for them to test Comodo Anti-virus. AVG Free user here though, used it for quite a while and don't plan to change.

Slimy
Still waiting for them to test Comodo Anti-virus.AVG Free user here though, used it for quite a while and don't plan to change. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Comodo would have to request to be tested. AVG is terrible imho.

I always took AV-Comps with a grain of salt because of this...and their amateurish policy on linking.

Peter Griffin
Interesting. VB100 rated Webroots AV (based on Sophos) the highest rating of all AV's. Wonder why there is such a large difference here?
mtrftw
And in the August comparative it only achieved the ranking of advanced. You can't rate things on one test. Augusts tests were on demand tests while Novemebers were retrospective/proactive. You can decide for yourselves which test is more important to you. primexx
And it's amateur because? do you see any professional organization display their results on a completely empty (not to mention ugly and crappily laid out) page and then say "oh but you can't link to this page directly because that won't satisfy our ego enough!!!"? I find it difficult to trust an organization who makes you jump through hoops just to get at any content, very spam like, don't you think?
revvo
do you see any professional organization display their results on a completely empty (not to mention ugly and crappily laid out) page Have you tried the PDF versions which actually look professional with better graphical representation of the data? What's that, no? Just as I thought.... and then say "oh but you can't link to this page directly because that won't satisfy our ego enough!!!"? I find it difficult to trust an organization who makes you jump through hoops just to get at any content, very spam like, don't you think? Jump through hoops? Let's count the number of hoops 1: open av-comparatives.org 2: click "Comparatives" 3: click latest results **** you're right, damn website's loaded with hoops! What you say makes no sense, alright? Spam like? How so, if anything they're preventing hotlinking which many websites prevent for their content. Hotlinking costs bandwidth and bandwidth costs money. Is it spam like because of their only unobtrusive Google ads which is loaded once and which generates profit per each click? You want to talk about trust? Yeah you can trust these guys, they're not endorsed by any of the AV makers. That's what you should be worried about. You want to bitch more, go right ahead but find me an independent organization that does what these guys are going, as unbiased as they are with a better presentation of the results as they do. I'm glad there's people out there that care how each AV performs so that we the customers can have a better idea of what to use or buy to be more secure. They're doing this for us, not for themselves and the results are open to anyone and everyone. You're probably just a fanboy of some of the poor performing AV's... admit it
primexx
Have you tried the PDF versions which actually look professional with better graphical representation of the data? What's that, no? Just as I thought.... that's supposed to redeem them how, exactly? Jump through hoops? Let's count the number of hoops1: open av-comparatives.org 2: click "Comparatives" 3: click latest results **** you're right, damn website's loaded with hoops! as opposed to clicking on one link to the results, yes it's two extra pages you'd have to load without getting anything useful at all. What you say makes no sense, alright? Spam like? How so, if anything they're preventing hotlinking which many websites prevent for their content. Hotlinking costs bandwidth and bandwidth costs money. Is it spam like because of their only unobtrusive Google ads which is loaded once and which generates profit per each click? this is exactly the excuse that amateur web devs use for crippling the user experience. newsflash: you can put the google ad on the results page, as well as your own logo and everything! what a thought eh? You want to talk about trust? Yeah you can trust these guys, they're not endorsed by any of the AV makers. That's what you should be worried about. You want to bitch more, go right ahead but find me an independent organization that does what these guys are going, as unbiased as they are with a better presentation of the results as they do. I'm glad there's people out there that care how each AV performs so that we the customers can have a better idea of what to use or buy to be more secure. They're doing this for us, not for themselves and the results are open to anyone and everyone. All I'm saying is that they're obviously doing something different since their results is relatively inconsistent with almost every other benchmark out there, and I'm not so certain they have the definitive rankings. If you want to stand by their results then by all means. You're probably just a fanboy of some of the poor performing AV's... admit it well actually...if you search my posts you'll see that I've always endorsed ESET & Kaspersky pretty even handedly for quite a while now. Denholm
Tried other antiviruses, but honestly nothing is as light on resources as Nod32. I quite like Kaspersky too, but it slows my PC.

Denholm
Check out NIS 2009. I would think about it, but my primary PC is a Mac not PC and Nod32 does really well for me. Thanks for the recommendation.
x-byte
No problem. Nice to see somone look at other antivirus with an open mind. The work Symantec did with 2009 Ed. is amazing. NOD 32 is also great, but I've just had problems with 3.0 myself. After trying NIS 2009 I've not looked back.
Scirwode
NOD32 has always been consistently at the top, and it has never let me down (Y) . Loved Nod32, but I got rid of it. I don't need the sense of security, I haven't ever gotten a virus and hopefully it will be that way. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Malaysia as it's a breeding ground for viruses and inept users :p . Scirwode
Max Veteran Posted December 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 19, 2008 I have tried NIS 2009 on two computers now and although not as crap as 2008 was - its still pretty ****, even after using the specific remover. The only major speed increase I found was in the Liveupdate.
