Ridley Scotts "Prometheus" (2012)

OMG B-t-s , when i thought it was put too sleep with just the film and the millions of questions. How did people find this video ?

Also can we, have the same names to make things easier:

Ie:

Engineers

Goo

Worms

Zenomorph

and all the creations need names.

Just an idea to make conversation easier.

Also its nice to know that when David and Elizabeth Shaw go through the Second ships nothing special happens or that there's nothing else in there, as its skip over.

http://www.projectprometheus.com/ Loads of stuff.

"It appears that a handful of Weyland Cybernetics Repair Stations, mostly on Earth and Luna, have received some reports, less than a few dozen reports, that certain David 7 units...have malfunctioned while in service," explains Kathryn Stuart-Rose, a Weyland Cybernetics spokesperson. "It appears that one of the emotion mapping and facial recognition sensors is the root of the problem," Stuart-Rose further explains, "The David 7's apparently misread human emotions such as surprise and interest, interpreting them instead as anger or frustration."

So.. the What Is 10.11.12 site.. does that mean we're gonna get a sequel much quicker than we expected?!

No, they didn't shoot back-to-back, so that'd be impossible. Plus releasing a sequel just four months later would be a disastrous business decision.

its the release date I believe for the DVD/Blu-Ray

Obviously the Bluray release date. 6 months is a usual turnaround now for the bluray/dvd release. I'm hoping we'll be getting a tidied up director's cut though.

I recently got back from seeing it and it was really good.

What I don't understand is why the surviving human alien decided to be hostile. Was it something that David said? Was it his job to reach Earth and wipe out the humans? Also, the human alien at the very beginning was quite interesting. My theory is that he rebelled against the others by creating human life in his own image (and possibly all life on Earth). After all, he committed suicide so his genetic material can be used to spawn new life. Whether that life is human or not is unknown, but it's most likely human. The evidence to support that is the similar DNA and appearance.

I wonder what Elizabeth Shaw hopes to accomplish by going after the human aliens. She'll likely get killed because as far as we know, they're hostile.

The prevailing theory about things is that the surviving Engineer that decapitated David and wiped everyone else out was carrying out his final orders before entering hypersleep which was to destroy Humanity. Why this is the case, who the hell knows. I guess a sequel might explain that better. But I agree with you about the opening scene and in fact some old Alien script stuff actually supports this notion. That the Engineer race was in a civil war, or at least disagreeing big time on how to do the things they were doing. In fact some people think the Engineer society as a whole was not even told the truth about the things they were doing out in space, and that the LV-223 Moon Lab etc were all "Black Ops" stuff to hide this from the main population.

As for Shaw going to the homeworld of the Engineer race, I think that's more of a setup for a sequel than anything else really. In an interview I read recently, Scott said plain and simple he knew Shaw and David had to survive (though David is more like, kinda surviving lol) to set up any further story threads they may pursue in a sequel. Whether we get to see the homeworld, and get explanations about why they were doing these things...who knows. Though the main overarching story thread for Shaw was her pursuit of our "Creators" and since she more or less found them, she decided what the hell I'll go for a visit with Mom and Pop.

I read this on a different forum..kinda makes sence:

The engineers dropped off the first alien to produce life on Earth, just as they have done on other planets. The Engineers then decided to get rid of humankind because we decided to have faith in a different creator (God) and not them. The way to do it was to use biological weapons to wipe out the human race ( goo in the canisters). Something went wrong and the "goo" turned on the aliens. that's why we see the holograms of the aliens running ( where the alien got his head chopped off).

The last alien was carrying out his mission to destroy humankind.

I saw it last week sometime in 3D (urgh). I've got to say, I was quite disappointed. I agreed with my friends; if you don't consider it to be part of the Alien universe then it could be ok, but as an Alien film it just didn't work.

Actually, that makes a lot more sense than what we were coming up with when we left the cinema. I'll have to let my friends know.

I wonder if the engineer we see in the film is representitive of the engineer's who create life on Earth. Perhaps the engineer's have religious beliefs of their own & there is a conflict over the creation of intelligent life; One group attempts to create it and the other attempts to destory it?

We can tell that the "engineers" had visited our planet more than once. Each culture of a different time period had basically the same drawing. So it seems like they were visiting us through out our evolution. Now, the ship on the moon was dated to have been there for roughly, 2000 years. It is the year 2091. 2000 years ago was basically the time us humans said to have killed Christ. What if Christ was one of them? What if we had killed one of their messengers or whatever, and that ****ed them off. It's a long shot, but one that seems to fit with the whole premise of everything else in the movie, such as - It being Christmas, A virgin birth of an alien (basically a miracle birth since it was almost instantaneous), sacrafice, and of course "our creators".

The other question... what did all the other planets do that made these "engineers" decide to try and wipe them out as well????

That's an interesting take on it.

I'm beginning to think that they have a strict code where they cannot create intelligent life or life that resembles them. Once they realized that one of their own created human life, they probably tried to wipe them out. However, various groups that supported the individual in the beginning may have come to Earth in order to protect the humans. It's possible that they (the pro-human faction) went as far as infecting their own people with a weapon. Who knows, maybe they differ so much morally that they're willing to kill each other. Perhaps one group wanted to use the weapon for destructive purposes whereas the other wanted to use it to create intelligent life. A recurring theme in science fiction is the existence of a single sentient species that spreads throughout galaxies to seed sentient life (in their own image).

It seems like they have a religion of their own too. The hologram scene in the bridge looked like some sort of ritual. Maybe they felt like Gods because of their technological prowess. Also, they may have feelings too. The last surviving alien looked at David in a way that seemed to convey feelings of regret and compassion. That is, until he realized that David wasn't human at all.

Here's a theory a friend and I came up with. It may have already been discussed, but I can't read through every comment here and elsewhere on the net, so my apologies if has already been posted:

We believe that the Engineers decided to expand their life in the universe. Maybe their home planet was being destroyed by some unknown event. So they drop off one Engineer at other planets capable of sustaining life.

Earth may be the first experient, but our planet's makeup is slightly different and we evolved differently. The obvious signs of differently are most notably in size and color, but also in intelligence.

If you created something dumb, but you were looking for something exactly the same or better, would you want to keep it around? So they decided to start over, but they needed to destroy us first.

I am very confused about something on this film. Wasn't Charles Bishop Wayland the creator of Wayland Corp? How come on this film it says it was Peter Wayland? Also, didn't Charles Wayland die in Alien vs Predator?

What is going on here?

The answer is simple. Prometheus is not a direct prequel to Alien. It is a different storyline entirely, with some similar elements.

From Wikipedia: "Under [Damon] Lindelof, the script began to divert from [Jon] Spaihts' Alien prequel into a more original creation. [Ridley] Scott and Lindelof worked together five days a week between July and August 2010, trying to piece together exactly what vision Scott was trying to convey and how the script needed to change, including scaling back the Alien symbology and tropes."

Prometheus' idea was born out of a prequel to Alien, but was later changed to be more of an original work that contained similar elements to Alien. Think of it like Fringe, two universes, two different stories, but with similar people and companies.

Or could it be when they traveled through space they traveled back in time? :o. That makes sense. Never occured to me until now. Everything fits. Sir Peter Weyland is the Son of Charles Bishop Weyland. "Bishop" died in 2004. Then Peter takes the reigns of the Weyland Industries and develops David. The perfect Cyborg/Android. (Both Bishop and Ash were work in progress that's why they were both defective.) Weyland probably broke off the connection between Weyland-Yutani because Yutani did not allow Weyland to patent the Android. Because of this we see linger effects of the logo everywhere. For an example, the recording that Dr. Shaw recorded has Yutani tech (and only Yutani) writing all over it. It's probably a old camera that she used to film her message.

During all this time, Shaw and Co found all the glyphs and stuff (as per beginning of Prometheus), and Peter Weyland needs a new boost for the company (after all, they just broke off with Yutani). So Weyland, like his father; has to be the first one there. (See AVP and how Bishop wants to be the first one on the iceberg to find the Alien/Predator battlegrounds). So he sends Shaw and Co to the planet using Prometheus. Then Prometheus unknowingly travels back in time during the voyage to the unknown planet. (They all were in cryo-sleep during the venture, so they won't know if they went back in time or not). There's one part in Prometheus that Shaw finds some sort of Pattern that is matched with some dna or something. That DNA could be the DNA of the Xenomorph, and how we see.. both matches. As we know, the Xenomorph takes dna off it's host. So that matches the 'Human' and 'Alien' wave pattern.

So that's my theory. lol. Or it's you know, just another universe. :p.

I saw it last night and actually, it was marvelous.

It's one of those movies that almost everything it's so good that you can actually put aside some plot mistakes (That, honestly, were minor and not as grave as many fans are saying) and just enjoy it wildly. It was a visual-fest. Very tense yet elegant, sometimes even poetic. It's one of those movies that in time will get more and more respect, due the power of retrospective.

P.S. David totally owned that movie.

I read this on a different forum..kinda makes sence:

This is pretty much the best theory I have read thus far. Short and sweet as well.

Btw, here's a reflection about something said in the movie:

At the very beginning Shaw ask "but who created the creators?". Later when they are exploring the ruins for the first time they stumble unto an altar of sorts that appears briefly on screen (Link: http://h.habitacion1...n-in-cavern.jpg) obviously depicting an Alien as we know it. The ending would like us to believe that what happens at the ending it's how the Alien race was created, however how do you explain that Altar?

My take is this: An original Alien like race created the engineers and their physical differences could be explained with Mendelian inheritance (The ability of genes to pass phenotype traits skipping generations). Other take could be that the engineers were in reality an slaved race by the original aliens and thus trying to accomplish a mission.

I propose this idea of Aliens as creators and not only as biological weapons because, iconologically, you DON'T make an altar for a weapon, but for religious reasons. Maybe, like some animal species, engineers could be seen as "pollinators", spreading the seed through the universe.

I dont know why the spoiler tag screwed the last paragraph, sorry, its out of my control.

I liked the movie, but the story was a bit different than some of you are saying...

Humans were created by mistake.

At the begging of the movie as the aliens are leaving earth one guy stays and he drinks a potion that destroys his body, but as he falls in the water a single string of DNA survives. Than the movie takes us to the evolution process starting with the creation of the single cell organisms.

That is why at the end of the movie the "Engineer" looks down on them as inferior and tryes to kill them with no attempt to comunicate.

So one way yo look at the whole story is that we were created by an accident by a much supperior race.

The doctor proceeds at then end to look for the meaning of life and to see if she can find out who is the ultimate creator, and what gives these engineers the right to create and destroy life.

    • SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 hands on by Steven Parker I was offered the chance to test out the SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500, and full disclosure, they let me keep it regardless of my findings. Anyway, I jumped at the chance due to my long hours sitting at my desk, mousing around. Apologies for the knife cut across the top of the box; that was my doing, being a bit too heavy-handed with opening up the outer packaging. First up, what's in the box: SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 1x Type-C charging cable User Manual 1-Year Warranty (card) In short, everything you need to get started. According to the official Amazon listing, here are the key features: Full-Hand Air Compression: OS500 wraps your fingers, palm, and wrist with multi-chamber air compression for a complete hand relaxation experience. The extended massage chamber helps cover more of the hand and wrist area than standard palm-only hand massagers Palm Kneading with 6 Modes & 6 Intensities: Built-in palm kneading rollers add a hands-on massage feel, while 6 preset modes and 6 pressure levels let you choose the comfort level that fits your day—from gentle relaxation to a firmer full-hand massage 3 Heat Levels with Cooling Fan: Choose from 104°F, 113°F or 122°F warmth to suit different seasons and comfort preferences. The built-in cooling fan helps reduce stuffiness during heated sessions, keeping your hand feeling fresh and comfortable Easy Visual Display & Smart Timer: The digital image display clearly shows massage area, mode, intensity, heat level, and remaining time at a glance. Select 10, 15, or 20-minute sessions for quick office breaks, evening relaxation, or everyday hand care Rechargeable, Cordless & Comfortable: A 3000mAh battery supports over 90 minutes of full-function use on a full charge, with convenient USB-C charging. The soft inner lining, smooth ABS/PU finish, and premium black-gold design make OS500 ideal for home, office, or gifting With all that out of the way, here are my own findings. I gave it a try on both left and right hands, and as you can maybe see from the above YouTube Short, (sorry for the shaky video), my whole hand fits in, but my wrist barely enters the Hand Massager. I was able to push through a bit more with my fingertips extending out the other end to get a bit of massaging on the start of my wrist. Usage For some reason, there is a strap that is very difficult to fasten to my wrist with one hand. I am not sure what function it has, and it isn't mentioned in the user manual. The only thing I could find was in the product images that claimed "wrist precision". Unlike the Bob and Brad Hand Massager, this device does not massage the wrist anyway, even though a "wrist mode" is mentioned, which must be for smaller hands than I have, as it is mainly intended for the hand and fingers. In addition, for its steeper price, there are no disposable gloves provided in the box, which is a bit of an issue considering the internal cover (which appears to be elasticated nylon) cannot be removed for washing; so you are left with only one choice: always thoroughly wash your hands before using it. I can imagine this thing getting a bit grimy after a period of use, and that is a bit of a shame. With that said, the buttons on the device, from left to right, do the following: Heat button: 3-level heat control at 104°F, 113°F, or 122°F Mode button: Auto mode Circular mode Soothing mode Relax mode Palm and fingers mode Palm and wrist mode Intensity button: from (First-time users) 15Ka, 25Ka, 35Ka, 45Ka, 55Ka, 60Ka (Intensive relief) Knead button: on or off (6 pressure levels) Power button: Long-press to turn on or off Cooling button: turn on or off the cooling fan Also, in the product imagery, it states there are 36 "custom modes," but nowhere is it listed what these modes are. I can only imagine that they mean a combination of all of the above settings in different intensity levels. The device itself seems to rely on a single "kneading" mechanism located at the palm area of the hand, which spins when in use, and the other massage features are mainly utilized through the air sacs, increasing and decreasing at various levels on the hand and fingers. I am not sure it offered too much relief for someone who is typing and operating a mouse for hours at a time; further testing may be required. It does feel nice, though. Finally, you may be wondering how this fits into the scope of a tech website? Well, let me tell you something: sometimes I sit for up to 15 hours working on Neowin, and although I take breaks in between, it takes a toll on my body. I think in the immediate absence of a partner to apply relief, a good massager like this Hand Massager can shed the strains of the day in just a couple of 15-minute bursts. On the official website, this has an MSRP of $99.99, but luckily for our readers, it is selling at $10 off for just $89.99 right now on Amazon. SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 for $89.99 (with $10 off coupon), $99.99 MSRP For me, this gets a thumbs hands(?) down. However, it could be improved by making it so that the protective covering could be removed and thrown into the washing machine, or get yourself some disposable gloves to use with it. • We check out the SKG PS700 Neck Massager by Steven Parker I was offered the chance to test out the SKG PS700 Neck Massager, and full disclosure, they let me keep it regardless of my findings. Anyway, I jumped at the chance due to my long hours sitting at my desk; I figured it could offer some neck pain relief. What's in the box: SKG PS700-2 Neck Massager Rechargeable Battery (inside massager) Type-C USB cable User Manual Quick Start guide 1-Year Warranty In short, everything you need to get started. According to the official listing, here are the key features: Biomimetic Kneading & High Torque Motor: Designed with innovative biomimetic kneading heads that perfectly simulate the touch of human hands. Powered by a high-torque motor, this massager delivers powerful and precise deep tissue relief to effectively target stiff neck muscles and release built-up tension Soothing Heat & Integrated Sound Relaxation: Experience the ultimate Relaxationation with our dual-action approach. SKG backs this device with dedicated customer service, making it a thoughtful tech-health gift for family and friends App & Bluetooth Music Control: Connect via Bluetooth to control your massage settings through the dedicated app and enjoy your favorite music during your massage session for a fully customizable and immersive relaxation experience Red Light Warmth Technology: Features advanced red light warmth technology that penetrates deep into neck muscles to enhance blood circulation and provide soothing comfort while relieving muscle tension and stiffness Design With all that out of the way, here are my own findings. SKG does not say what materials are used to make the neck massager. However, on the product website, it mentions "soft-touch silicone" with what looks like PU leather cushioning, with the rest being mostly made up of plastics. On the inside of the massager, there are two "biomimetic kneading heads" that are motorized for the different styles of massage, which are not actually listed at all in the paper user manual, but the standard included modes are: De-stress mode, Mediation mode, Relax mode, Shiatsu mode. The massager looks quite premium and is actually very comfortable to wear. This massager is small and light enough to go anywhere, as it doesn't get in the way of anything, so I was able to use it in the chair while writing this review. Unlike the back massager, SKG does not warn in the user guide not to use it for more than 30 minutes a day (or two 15-minute sessions). However, there is a long laundry list of important safeguards to consider before and during the use of the device, and it is warned that the neck massager is not waterproof. It also includes a 1,400mAh battery with a rated power of 14W and input of 5V, which is the standard for up to USB 3.0 power (although the Amperage is not mentioned at all). SKG does not say how long it takes to charge, but a quick calculation at 2A (if that is what it is) would mean it would take roughly 1.5 hrs to charge from empty. In any case, the light around the button changes from orange to green on a full charge. In addition, it is not possible to use the device while it is charging. On the right of the neck massager is the On/Off and modes button, which also acts as a joystick. You can operate all the modes directly from the power button, as well as the app, which I'll get into a bit later: Push up: Short press to adjust Heat levels On/Off button: long press Mode Switching: Short press (while in operation) ➕ Push left: increase Music volume ➖ push right: decrease Music volume Push down: Short-press to turn Music on or off The massager defaults to De-stress mode, and it is not stated anywhere if the neck massager has overheat protection. This time around, regarding heat, the only detail I could find is that it has "triple action soothing heat." The temperature stages are not listed anywhere in the paper manual, Amazon listing, or official website. The heat levels can be adjusted through the app or directly on the device using the joystick button. Usage There's also the SKG Health app, which makes using the massager far easier than feeling around for the button on the side of your neck. If the app is stopped, you are required to log in with a verification code over email, which I am not too pleased with, as this means it will only work that way for however long SKG decides to support it through said app. However, I was not able to get the app to connect to the OS500, which I have reported back to my contact. Bluetooth appeared to be working on the neck massager as it became available to pair with my phone, but the SKG app failed to discover it. Before I forget, there's also a switch next to the USB charging port to deactivate and activate the Voice Prompt, which, when enabled, audibly tells the user when switching intensities, modes, or connecting to the app and informs when the massages start and are completed. That said, on to my likes and dislikes, which are listed below. What I didn't like Unable to connect the Neck Massager to the app Use through the mobile app relies on continued support from SKG What I liked Can be used without the app Cordless use Light and comfortable to wear Heat is also quite comfortable Where to buy: According to the official website, this has an MSRP of $249.99, but is currently $50 (on Amazon). To sweeten the deal a bit more, there's also an in-page coupon that knocks a further $20 off the price. SKG PS700-2 Neck Massager for $179.99 on Amazon (was $199.99) Apply the in-page $20 off coupon for the final price of $179.99 Just like the back massager, this gets a confused thumbs up (due to the cost). However, I cannot rate it through app usage as it failed to connect. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
