Upgrading from 3GS to iPhone 4

Recommended Posts

I got my 3GS back in March of 2010 on a 3yr contract, so I can't upgrade through my provider anytime soon (unless I buy the phone outright for like $660 from them). I was thinking of buying an iPhone 4 through craigslist, and selling my 3GS on there as well. Is it worth it though? has there been any news of anything coming out between the iPhone 4 and 5 the there was with the 3G (that being the 3GS)?

What do you guys think?

iPhone 4 uses a different kind of SIM to your 3GS, I think. So you can't just pop your current card in there.

I cut my SIM into the exact size of the Micro SIM and it has worked 100% in my iPhone4 since I got it in October :D hehe

Btw, I love the iPhone4. It's super fast, great camera in photo and video mode, retina display which looks phenomenal and when an app uses it, is just superb. And btw, I never had a single dropped call or bad call quality no matter how I hold it. I'm in the UK. I'm on Orange and my signal is usually pretty nice.

Yeah, at this point I'd probably wait, but if you can get a good deal, the 3GS to 4 was the biggest jump that the iPhone has made, so it would certainly be quite the upgrade. My mom has a 3GS and whenever I see her screen I cringe a little. I had an iPhone 4 for a while and now I have the Captivate with the Super AMOLED, both of which make the 3GS screen look terrible. It's up to you, but I'd say it depends on the deal you can get.

I actually haven't held/played around with an iPhone 4 yet believe it or not, would really like to see one. None of my close friends have one lol :$ Seems like everyone's on the crackberry train these days....

I'm guessing you don't have any Apple stores near by or else that'd be a good place to go play with them. The screen really is amazing. You don't realize how low the resolution is on the older iPhones until you see the new one. I never thought I could see the individual pixels so obviously on my 3G until I looked at it again after using the iPhone 4 for a couple of days. You would literally have to strain to see individual pixels on the iPhone 4. And that's just the screen. Obviously the CPU, GPU, memory, and everything else are upgraded quite a bit too.

I've noticed that a lot of people out west are all about the blackberries  When I go back to Nanaimo all my old friends are using blackberries but over here most people I know have iPhones

I would just wait for the next iPhone. Not much different from 3GS to 4. Just better quality in images, facetime, and that's about it. Everyone that has the 3GS doesn't notice any difference between my 4 and their 3GS.

Sorry, but I think you're crazy. Just my opinion. Using my mom's 3GS after having used an iPhone 4 for a month felt like i was using a dinosaur. Anyone who said they didn't notice a difference was just trying to make themselves feel better about their 3GS.

I don't necessarily disagree on waiting though since a new one should be out pretty soon.

I have owned the first and second generations of the iPod touch and always through the screen was amazing on them. Then I got my iPhone 4 from Verizon and wow, it's an eyesore looking at the screen on my iPod Touch now. The screen difference after using the iPhone 4 is very noticeable now.

3G > 3GS was the largest upgrade. Totally different processor architecture. I'm not saying that the iPhone 4 isn't faster than the 3GS, but its not dramatically different like the upgrade from the 3G was.

Actually, you made me look back at the specs again and it's closer than I thought, but I think looking at it the jump from the 3G to the 3GS is about the same as the 3GS to the 4. The 3GS did move to the Cortex A8 CPU like the 4, and upgrade to the same GPU as the 4, but the clock jump from 3GS to 4 and doubled memory still make it a big jump. The iPhone 4 is almost twice as fast as the 3GS and has twice the memory. I underestimated the jump from 3G to 3GS.

I agree, going back to a 3GS would be weird for me as well. But, once again these friends didn't actually get to take home my iPhone 4 and hang out on it like I get to.

    • On xiaomi hyperos there's also an option to disable google assistant. I've got everything disabled. Only thing I do have installed is a web wrapped for duck.ai which claims to let you use various AIs anonymously
    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
    • Looks like no official TBW rating, which should be a required listing in my opinion for sites like Amazon (hell, put it on the box too.)
