It's just a slideshow of wallpapers anyway. The majority of Linux desktops here is Ubuntu, and you can only do so much with it.

Plus, in the Mac version of the thread, it's just a slideshow of Killa Aaron's goofy layout over and over (with changed wallpapers/dock icons).

NO NEED FOR THIS.

You are trolling that's all, why even come into threads like this to make inane comments?

What is so different about this as opposed to the equivalent Windows threads????

Well, someone has to be the first to post their desktop lol

I had to re-installed Linux...I was playing around with the dd command, to install Mandriva 2011 Alpha onto a flash drive...I messed up...

Did you know you can format a Linux drive while using it...? I do now...lo

Luckily, I didn't lose much.

But, gave me an excuse to try KDE.

I refer Gnome's default file manager (Which I switched), image viewer (Also switched), weather (Panel. Doesn't show the temperature unless hover over it..) and system monitor (Panel. I like Gnome's graph...)...

But otherwise, it's nice. More options :)

Anyways, here is mine for now. Still more playing to do lol

I used to customize the living **** out of my desktop because the defaults have always been terrible save for a few exceptions, like Kubuntu back in the 6.06 days.

Ubuntu's latest release however looks gorgeous out of the box, and although there are many stellar themes out there, this one is so well integrated with the icons and the overall feel that I just prefer it to anything else I've seen so far.

I've only made a few changes. The fonts are huge by default so I shrunk them down to 9 point, and I'm used to Windows 7's taskbar so here I have a taskbar just like the one from Windows 7(it's DockbarX).

Mine at the moment. Most likely to annoy the Mac zealots. I don't really care. I like it. And no - I'm not deliberately going for a Mac look. I feel that Elementary is one of the only VSs for Gnome at the moment that is of high quality. And that's something that matters to me.

Nothing too fancy, just changed the background and added this conky script (kinda useless though, as I hardly ever get to see my wallpaper).

To be honest I hate how there's different padding between the icons in the notification area and those in the indicators applet, it looks messy  and the icon theme could use a change, but then it's just the laptop at work... oh well :p

@home (clicky for biggie)

Faenza icons, theme is equinox (IIRC). Overall the kind of stuff most people seems to be using these days

Wallpaper from somewhere in the internet, years ago

I just discovered minitube... quite cool :p and Android Notifier, which would be awesome if it integrated with both the messaging indicator (to keep track of missed calls and SMS's) and my google account (to show contacts' images when receving calls and messages). As it stands now it's barely useful: if I'm not hearing the phone nor watching the screen right when it's ringing I'll be missing the call anyway :(

I think these threads really took off thanks to Windows XP, its theming culture, and the surge in popular minimalism. These days, though, desktop customization doesn't move as rapidly, and even the most intense alterations can never seem to shake off that feeling of "I swear I've seen this before..."

As far as Linux desktops, they can be pretty drab in screenshots, and the best customizations I've seen can really only be appreciated in motion (transition effects, etc). Not a lot of people embedding YouTube videos here, though, sadly.

Even where you'd expect the most interesting desktop shots (Android) thanks to having the largest custom desktop variety of probably any computing platform, I'm growing weary of pretty much the same metro-style clock widgets/livewalls, Sense weather imitations, and the same old Launcherpro/ADW look. Those threads, too, have been reduced to showing off wallpaper, your BAMF 9+ homescreens, whatever color/opacity your notification bar gives you a hardon for this week, and a generic, mindnumbing shot of your status screen so we can see whatever kernel you're rocking.

But I still come here for the wallpapers. :D It's a shame so many geeks feel the need to splash 1920 x 1200 pixels worth of ###### across their screens all day, though. They're always the least impressive shots, and just make me feel like I'm looking at some 14 year old's desktop while he's in between pr0n sites.

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
