Tyson Fury has confirmed he will fight British heavyweight rival David Haye in Manchester on 28 September.

Former WBA heavyweight champion Haye, 32, has not fought since a fifth-round stoppage victory against Dereck Chisora in July 2012.

Fury, 25, was last in action in April when he spectacularly stopped American Steve Cunningham in the seventh round of their bout in New York.

The Haye v Fury contest will take place at the Manchester Arena.

A joint statement from both camps said: "David Haye and Tyson Fury, both world-ranked, charismatic and dangerous, have agreed to a highly-anticipated domestic showdown on Saturday, 28 September at the Manchester Arena.

"It marks not only the biggest heavyweight encounter of 2013, but also the biggest fight staged in Britain for many years."

It's weird... when I was a kid, in the 60's and 70's, boxing was huge.  Everything stopped, Dad turned on the TV and we watched bouts...  but then everyone grew concerned about the punishment the boxers took and all of a sudden boxing is evil, fewer athletes were attracted to it and it was more or less gone... HBO only.

 

Now along comes these raw, anything goes cage fights that are HUGELY popular (at least around here)...  aren't those more raw and brutal than boxing?  Less art, more bashing?  I wish boxing could regain some of its old popularity and become a sport broadcast on general stations.

It wasn't traumatic head injury that killed boxing, it was large scale corruption and the multitude of organizations around promoting their own belts. To this day there are more weight classes than you can count, spread out in more than a dozen alphabet soup associations. You won't see it on network TV soon, at least not on an important scale, because there is tons of money to be made on the PPV market. Well, at least most of the times, until Floyd prices himself out of the PPV market.

 

As for "cage fighs", MMA has come a long way since the anything goes days of UFC 1 and Vale Tudo competitions. It's a great sport and it's relatively safe compared to other contact sports. You should check out some of the free fights made available on Youtube by the UFC, Invicta FC and Bellator. Start with something amazing like Carlos Condit vs Rory MacDonald.

Unbeaten heavyweight talent Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO?s) scored his 29th straight KO win with a 1st round knockout win over former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (25-6, 16 KO?s) on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA. The 6?7? Deontay nailed Liakhovich with a big right hand that drove him backwards from the force of the sledgehammer blow. Deontay added another right hand, and then put the coup de grace with a tremendous right hand to the head that sent Liakhovich down on the canvas. Liakhovich stayed down for a long time before getting up.

Welterweights Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KOs) and Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KOs) collide December 7 in either Dubai, UAE, or Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Golden Boy is waiting to see if Dubai ?has the capcity? to handle the event. Khan told the Daily Mail, ?I do have a lot of fans in the Middle East and especially in the UAE. Maybe he does feel that everyone will be against him if we fight in Dubai. But I can assure it will be a fair fight, obviously. If it happens, it will be a global event. They are doing big things in Dubai and UAE and it will be beneficial for all ? if we fight in Dubai.?
