8 seems well on track, now give me Explorer Features!

Recommended Posts

Im still using XP as my main OS. Thought I should start with that as for many of you our OS choice defines us on Neowin. I?ve used 7, it?s nice but it didn?t have anything I needed and I didn?t like the UI enough.

I?ve found it hard to move from XP. Im hard to please, slow to change and set in my ways when it comes to things that work for me, but then is that a bad thing? 7 is nice, it?s a good stable OS and better than XP but its just not worth the money to me when it doesn?t assists me with my issues.

I really don?t like user interfaces that are all about effect, give me usability any day and just a plain toolbar?Anyway, from what I have seen of Windows 8 it looks really nice, gone is the who ?transparent effect? (thank god) and in place some nice designs for toolbars. Not that any of that would affect my purchase when it comes to usability.

All I really hope now is Window 8 is the first revision of Windows to carry some decent upgrades to Explorer. File tagging is good but I need to tag any type of file and folder. I need to have something that I know I can move onto future versions of Windows as my file database grows.

A decent tagging system for all file types with the ability to define how we organise our huge system of files could truly be the selling point for the user that inst interested in new mini apps (we all know you can get better freeware apps from people that are passionate and update every few months).

Please give me an upgrade to Explorer

If by "transparency effects" you were referring to Aero, it can be turned off: the whole theme and just the transparencies. When you do that, it actually looks really similar to the 8 "flat theme".

As for Explorer, apparently it's getting the ribbon UI in some form. If you like Office you'll feel right at home.

Instant Search.

Completely aesthetic feature added in Windows Vista and honed in Windows 7.

Same is true of libraries, home groups etc etc

There are tons of explorer upgrades, you just need to spend a little time looking into them :)
