Apple's Magic Mouse may include multitouch display in future

It seems that Apple may be keen on bringing the user experience of the multitouch display from the iPad & iPhone and put it inside the Magic Mouse, in a new patent application which apple has filed to the US Patent and trademark Office and dug up by Patentlyapple.com. The new mouse would be able to display information and allow users to input directly from the mouse such a number keypad, when using applications such as calculator. The screen would then change to a different functionality for each application when they're switched between active and non-active if the application's developer was to support it.

Apple puts in summary that "While sophisticated devices such as the iPhone provide significant information to a user regarding use of the device as a controller. For more common and basic input devices, such as keyboards, mice, trackpads, tablets, etc., functionality available through the input device is not usually conveyed through the input device, but, if at all, through the user interface on the system to which inputs are provided. As a result, it is not always apparent to the user which input should be used to access particular application functions."

Though that this may be the first time we may see a mouse that could possibly feature a multitouch display we have seen keyboards such as the Asus EE Keyboard that was released last year which is full keyboard that features a 5" touch display on the right hand side.

Once you use a magic mouse it's hard to imagine going back to a simple button-based mouse. The accelerated scrolling is worth the price alone.

Pretty true,at first you might need amount of time to comfort with your hand and once you build up a relationship for 3-4 days it just feel natural to scroll, swap, click without any additional button around the mouse.

Looks interesting, but of course it would require a new mouse. I'm still hoping that Apple releases a firmware update for the Magic Mouse that adds a few new gestures.

Why is everybody obsessed with touchscreens?

This functionality (custom UI's based on the application) can't even be closely replicated with buttons. It's basically touch screens or scrap this idea altogether. Personally, I like it.

Really don't like the ergonomics of the magic mouse, magic trackpad is pretty nice though. I wish my laptop had the same trackpad as the MBP's do, luckily I use a mouse most of the time.

I would love the next Magic Trackpad to be a square multi-touch display. It would probably still cost too much to produce though.

That said it took a bit of a gamble on buying the Magic Trackpad, but I haven't looked back since. My Magic Mouse is still gathering dust.

If a forthcoming revision of the Magic Mouse will gain this feature, I think it's pretty much a given that the Magic Trackpad will gain a larger version of it. It already is a multi touch surface after all, just not an OLED display as well.

i said it just to set and example...

Pretty good example since people who even use their keypad use their right hand to use it which is also the hand most people for their mouse. Means you don't have to let go of the mouse to use these keys and if widely adopted, gets rid of the need for the physical keys all together.

Go figure, one minute they're making stuff basic - now cramming it all back in.
My iMac lacks a hash key or insert option, in fact several other important keys simply missing!

Shift+3 for hash key? I have a brand new bluetooth keyboard and I have the hash symbol on my 3 key.

How is going from a one buttoned mouse > to a multi buttoned mouse > to the worlds first commercial multi-touch mouse making stuff basic?

Apple offered you the option to go with the wider corded keyboard.
