Fast Five tops list of most pirated movies in 2011

Downloading movies is a big deal among those who pirate content on the Internet and 2011 was no exception. TorrentFreak.com reports that the action-driving movie sequel Fast Five was the most pirated movie on the Internet in the past year. The story claims to use number of sources to create its list, including information from thousands of BitTorrent users.

The list claims that Fast Five was downloaded 9,260,000 times in 2011, which is well below Avatar, which had 16 million pirated downloads when it was the number one downloaded movie in 2010. The Hangover Part II was second on the list followed by the Marvel Comics super hero flick Thor at number three.

A number of movies which didn't do well at the box office showed up on the list, including the sci-fi movie Source Code at number four, the teen alien flick I Am Number Four in the number five position and the fantasy action film Sucker Punch at number six. Major box office hits like Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides didn't break the top 10 list of pirated movies.

The full list is below

  • 1. Fast Five - 9,260,000 downloads
  • 2. The Hangover Part II - 8,840,000 downloads
  • 3. Thor - 8,330,000 downloads

Look at you with your high and mighty attitude. I'm willing to bet you're as big a pirate as anybody here.

The list makes sense.

These are movies I wouldn't pay money at a theater to see. The only way I'd see them is for free.

except Source Code is one of the best quality films of the year as if there is one film worth buying on that list it's definitely that one.

Sucker Punch........havent heard of it.

One more download before 2011 ends

I take that back. I thought I remembered it as a comedy. Will not download or watch.

a wise decision

Sucker Punch <-- It's like 300, worth watching just for the eye candy special effects and the rock music, just don't expect much about the story. It's a Music Video, movie scale.

except there was a big difference... 300 was not boring, and Sucker Punch is.

i could not even finish watching Sucker Punch and it was only one of two films out of the 66 i had seen for 2011 that was so boring i could not even finish the film as my interest was dead low in it and i could not take it any more.

The full list is below

1. Fast Five - Didn't See and Won't Watch.
2. The Hangover Part II - Have it on Disc, haven't seen it yet.
3. Thor -Seen it on PPV.
4. Source Code - Seen it on PPV.
5. I Am Number 4 - watched part of it
6. Sucker Punch - watched most of it.
7. 127 Hours - Seen it on HBO
8. Rango - Watched it at neighnbors
9. The King's Speech - Have the DVD.
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - I absolutely HATE Harry Potter Books and Movies!

1. Fast Five - MOVIES
2. The Hangover Part II - RENTED
3. Thor - MOVIES
4. Source Code - FELL ASLEEP TOO
5. I Am Number 4 - MOVIES
6. Sucker Punch - RENTED
7. 127 Hours - FELL ASLEEP TOO
8. Rango - NOT WATCHED
9. The King's Speech - RENTED
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - MOVIES

Some things you need to see at the movies! and the rest just hire them out. don't know why people download movies, pointless when you can rent it for like 5NZD from your video store.

1. Fast Five - Not Seen
2. The Hangover Part II - Saw at the Cinema
3. Thor - Not Seen
4. Source Code - Purchased DVD
5. I Am Number 4 - Not Seen
6. Sucker Punch - Not Seen
7. 127 Hours - Not Seen
8. Rango - Not Seen
9. The King's Speech - Purchased DVD & Rented it
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Purchased DVD

.. I think you can tell where I lie in the pirating department. ... Far out of it.

you apparently mis-read the topic.... it's MOST PIRATED FOR 2011. NOT a Top 10 list in general.

protocol7 said,
Nope I read it right. It's still a top ten list regardless of how it's calculated.

sure, in the basic sense of most pirated list. but it's not actually someones Top 10 of the year type list.

#4 is easily the best film on the list

they have a HD copy 'out there'. but if there is any film worth buying on the list it's that one.

here is how i would rank the films on the list...

1.Source Code (8/10) (my 2nd or 3rd best of 2011) (also, the guy who directed this also did 2009's 'Moon' (9/10, maybe a 8.5) which is the best film of 2009)
2.Thor (7/10) (best super hero film of 2011)
3.Fast Five (7/10) (i think the first film of the series is the overall best)
4.I Am Number Four (7/10, probably a 6.5) (this was on edge of Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down but i gave it benefit of the doubt)
5.127 Hours (6/10) (Thumbs Down) (the real life story on this was more interesting than the film)
6.Sucker Punch (3/10 MAX) (Thumbs Down)

in general with me... 6/10 or lower = Thumbs Down. 7/10 or higher = Thumbs Up. and... pretty much anything i give less than a 7 i won't bother re-watching where as anything 7/10 or more i can and often to re-watch although those ones in the "7/10, maybe (or probably) a 6.5" are usually on the back burner when it comes to re-watching though.

Edited by ThaCrip, Dec 27 2011, 7:02pm :

when Fast Five does... $626,137,675 worldwide i don't think anyone feels guilty about downloading it.

4. Source Code - 7,910,000 downloads

it's the 2nd or 3rd best film of the year out of the 66 films i have seen so far.

My Top 3 films of 2011 out of the 66 i have seen and are most likely a lock at this point...

1.Drive (this ranks very high on my all time list to. it's EASILY the best film of 2011)
2.In Time
-.Source Code

(so my 2nd/3rd films are to close to call)

3. Thor - 8,330,000 downloads

best super hero film of the year. (X-Men: First Class is overrated)

6. Sucker Punch - 7,200,000 downloads

THE worst film i have seen for 2011 out of the 66 i have seen. i only made it 39minutes into it before i turned it off as it was damn boring.

and for the record... my BOTTOM 3 films of the year out of the 66 i have seen...
1.Sucker Punch (THE worst of the year)
2.Hanna (like Sucker Punch it was boring, i could not finish watching it but i made it further into this before killing it though)
3.Apollo 18 (this was basically boring to (but mostly later into the film) but i actually finished watching this)

p.s. 127 Hours/The Kings Speech are 2010 films. i have seen 6 of the 10 films listed. the ones i have not seen i don't have much interest to see which are... Hangover II/The Kings Speech/Rango/Harry Potter. it's possible i might eventually get around to seeing The Kings Speech but the other three i am almost positive i won't be watching into the foreseeable future. also, as far as comedies go i think 'The Change-Up' was my favorite of 2011 out of the 10-ish total comedies i have seen this year.

Other than showings at film festivals, 127 hours was released in theaters in 2011 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1542344/releaseinfo). And while The King's Speech did premier in 2010, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1504320/releaseinfo it was generally the last week or two of the year in some countries, and early 2011 in most others. And it is quite possible the article was referring to their DVD/Blu-Ray release dates (since that is when most people would have pirated a decent copy). Putting them on a list of "most pirated movies of 2011" makes sense.

For all of the "America sucks" sentiment on the internet, people sure love pirating our movies and TV shows. Wassa matta? Your own country's shows and movies too crappy to watch?

Yep. America still sucks but often somewhat less than most other countries.

roadwarrior said,

Marketing. And also you never dare watch anything other than American, while we do. The biggest percentage of torrenting is probably American so it will hit TPB's top 100 and then we will download alongside you. Foreign movies rarely make it to the top 100 even if they are excellent.

In my free time me and my wallet is too busy gaming. So I haven't watched nor even downloaded any of them except Fast Five. That one wasn't half bad for the half-brainless entertainment value it is actually meant to be. I wonder if Source Code is watchable?

Sucker Punch and I am number 4 got to be some of the worst movies this year along with Battle LA and Red riding hood.

Anyone who downloaded Sucker punch should be refunded the bw.

roadwarrior said,
I mostly agree with you, but Red Riding Hood was pretty cool. Then again, I love modern versions of classic fairy tales.

Well i agree that Red Riding Hood was at least interesting. I actually liked it a little bit because like you i like fairy tales. But it ccould have been so much more imo.

I'm a big fan of Once Upon a time.

At least i finished Red riding hood and Battle LA. Sucker punch and and I am number fun i left the theater before the end lol

warwagon said,
I wonder how many of them got letters!

which is why the other alternatives are better as torrents are just yelling 'bust me now!' nowadays.

what i use i am never going to get a letter basically since no one can see what your downloading as it's SSL (encrypted) and you don't have to share anything and the place that serves the files don't keep logs etc.

This list does not include downloads from the various download hosting sites, IRC, privet trackers, FTP's. So thpse numbers are potentially a lot bigger.

Okay, then wait until they come out on rental or iTunes for a couple of quid, which is half the price of watching at the cinema. Hardly justification for pirating movies. If it's not worth even a couple of quid, why are you wasting your time watching it?

We have a very limited selection in Canada but I was surprised how no one has seen any of these movies on Netflix!! so, should i take it that Netflix has movie selections older than 2 years (some movies on that list are from 2010 as pointed out earlier)? or is it that even though a hear a lot of support here for Netflix on neowin, not many actually subscribe and do about either renting, pirating or purchasing on disc format?

* 1. Fast Five - Haven't watched (yet) or DL'd

Because the Movie Studio limit their selection on Netflix. Here is the thing, a movie comes out on DVD/Blu-ray today, Netflix is not allowed to carry it for at least a month. So if I am renting physical DVDs/Blu-rays, I have to wait a month after release. That's not even saying that it will be available for streaming after that month (only physically).

A person sees a movie is out on DVD/Blu-ray. They don't want to buy it. So they illegally downloaded it so they can watch it today. Clearly the movie studios are sending us a message that we should pirate. People don't want to buy physical packaging anymore. The studios need to embrace digital movies and not limit companies like Netflix on what they can stream or not stream. They shouldn't even be limiting Netflix on when they are allowed to distribute the physical media. All that tells me is pirating is OK IMO
