Feature-packed update for Xbox One preview members starts rolling out

Xbox One September update for preview members has started rolling out with a number of new features.

We reported about the new features that were coming to the Xbox One, recently. Now, Microsoft has announced through the official Xbox News website, that the preview update with some of these features has started rolling out to Xbox One system testers. More so, some of the existing features will be made available in more countries as the Xbox One console is now becoming available in 29 new markets over the coming month.

The preview update features a new Friends section to track friends' activities and a Media Player app which would be able to play most audio and video files including animated GIFs and MKV from the web or USB storage devices.

Existing apps such as Party, SmartGlass and Settings will also be updated. Additionally, the preview includes support for the new Xbox One TV tuner accessory which will be available to consumers in Europe; Microsoft has also enabled the ability to boot to TV when coming out of standby. Users will now be able to track bandwidth under the network settings.

Preview testers will be notified about the availability of the update over the next few days.

for media playback.

Insert a USB hard drive or flash drive with a media file on it. The xbox will detect it and a banner comes up saying inspect drive. Hold xbox symbol and it will take you to the App Store to directly download the app. Seems like it is kind of hidden ATM. Mkv playback isn't working in it yet either. MP4 ran fine.

I want to join in the Preview Program. Is anyone here participating and be kind enough to invite me in. My gamertag is ZLUNA

Thanks

This is not the update with Media Player and the new friends tab. This update includes:
Parties, Boot to TV, Live TV Miniguide, "Xbox On" in New Markets, Multiple GameDVR Deletes, Settings Update, and Bandwidth Usage Dispaly.

What? The source link on xbox.com specifically lists those two features - "New Friends Section" and "Media Player". Granted, the media player is an app that is rolling out out-of-band with the system update, but the system update enables it...

From the forum - for the media app, if you plug a USB into your Xbox, it should prompt you to download the Media app. Friends tab I'm not sure about.

Not sure if update related, but MS have started to offer digital downloads through retailers like Amazon. Hopefully that should start to drive some competition with downloads

I got the update around 12PM AEST. 1963MB for me. FINALLY they added the 'Xbox On' voice command which I still don't understand why it took so long. If you swap regions on the console to United States, it worked perfectly.
Anyway, keep the updates coming Microsoft. I love my Xbox One.

It would be nice if "Xbox On" worked using a normal speaking voice rather than whispering at it like you're in a library (and before someone comments, I've recalibrated Kinect several times, and all other voice commands work just fine).

And the Sony Playstation 4 is screwed.
Non of the new consoles have had this basic feature, and a console is a media hub/center/server, how is it possible that neither Microsoft or Sony has implemented these basic features?
With this update Xbox ONE is the only viable choice, this update will for sure attract more people to buy XBOX ONE's.

You do know Sony can implement this. Without competition, it's unlikely either console would be as good as it is. So be thankful.

What? Of course they can. But I find it pathetic that these devices aren't able to do this from the start, as they are media hubs etc. Don't know about the 360 but the ps3 still doesn't work great as a media center.

They're really not media hubs though are they. PS4 was never advertised as one, it was advertised as a games console from the start. Most TVs now do USB/Netflix/Youtube/DLNA streaming.

The only media I'd play on PS4/xbone is Blu-ray

Got an update late last night ... 1.42 gb if I recall. Going to test out some of the media playback tonight.

It's more like 1.92GB.
