First pictures of Microsoft's 'Pink' phones revealed

Microsoft's secret project, dubbed 'Pink', is quite a big deal amongst the rumor community. We talked about it a little while ago, and things have certainly developed since then. Just earlier, Gizmodo revealed the first pictures of two 'Pink' phones which Microsoft hasn't officially acknowledged yet.

The two phones are called 'Turtle' and 'Pure', and are going to be produced by Sharp, who will share branding with Microsoft on the devices. Please note that in the photos included below, the first one is 'Turtle' and the latter is 'Pure'. They're quite interesting devices, very rounded and sleek, with the 'Turtle' looking similar to the Palm Pre.

Unfortunately, Gizmodo's sources won't reveal any other information about the devices yet, though no doubt more information will come out soon. It's rumored that the Pink phones will have Zune services and an app store also, to distribute third-party applications.

Well, the Pure isn't horrible, but that Turtle has to be one of the ugliest things I've seen in a long time... How can that come from the company that made the sexy Zune HD? LOL I'd really hoped for more from Project Pink...

These are a big NO from me. I guess if they are trying to reach 3rd world countries w/ cheap phones, then I can see these working. Otherwise I don't see any self respecting person picking these ahead of the bazillion other phones available.

No, they aren't sexy, and in this market that's what people are looking for.

I won't go so far as to say they are ugly, but they do look like the illegitimate children of a Palm Pre and some of the older HTC phones, with a little bit of Samsung DNA throw in for good measure.

i think they look quite jarring... it would have looked amazing 10 years ago, but now it just looks like a really old prototype...

Hmm, wow, I'm surprised everyone seems to hate them... personally, I like the Pure. It's kinda... almost minimalistic. Not to the extent of the iPhone because of the keyboards, but really. It has one button on the front. The Zune is more of a stylized product, and while that may have been a better direction for these phones... I think they would both look much better when they're not sloppy renders.

I mean really. Look at the Turtle. Look at the sliding half. Then look at the other half... and try to wrap your mind around how that would work.

Pink? So now they are borrowing codenames from Apple and IBM? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taligent

I would be shocked if anyone in Microsoft's project Pink had even heard of Apple's use of the name. "Pink" probably has some other meaning that lead to the name... It's really not very unique a word...

Microsoft needs to radically rewrite Windows Mobile. No matter how nice the manufacturers make it look, it still functions and feels like a tired, outdated system. Screw reverse compatibility, if you keep supporting 10-year old apps you're not going to get very far.

Isn't that, uh, the whole point of Windows Mobile 7?

I guess it'll probably have some sort of compatibility mode, but even so, it's supposed to be a huge change from previous versions. If the screenshot on these phones is any indication, it will be. Although I can't say I'm a huge fan of the somewhat cluttered UI.

I like the top one most, but I'm not a fan of sliders at all. I really REALLY want a Microsoft branded phone, but these slider things never seem to get the keyboard large enough for my fingers, and I end up hating them

If WinMo 7 lives up to expectations concerning the social features and centralization, the Turtle might be really interesting for teens. The Pure looks too generic.

FUGLY! I can do without the slide out keyboard. Take that away and I think I'd sign up for one of these. Just make sure it has a Zune HD like interface.

Have you used slide outs for a consdierable amount of time? Sure they add bulk to the phone and make the devices look less "clean" but in terms of usability they win easily.

I've toyed with blackberrys, iphones, nokia n97, samsung sgh-f700 - let me say the iphone is the worst for typing anything on. Its complete lacking in tactile feedback and requires much more effort and concentration.

My friend who's had his iPhone for ages and types a lot on it was less than half the speed I could type on my N97 after a typing on it for 5 mins.

Don't all the new releases have comparable sound quality. I have not heard anything bad about any android phones (except the ****ty ones without a proper port), and the iPhone has great quality sound.

Perhaps it's the button that leads to special characters and the like.

i.e. ' " ! @ # $ % ^ & * : ; /

agreed.

Except that you would most likely hit the green button to activate the keys displaying green numbers and symbols. Green button + S = @, as you can clearly see.

I'd say it's more likely to either be for emoticons or simply a placeholder for any other button they might need.

Most phones have a symbol key and a characters on the function level. how else doyou get them fancy e's?

palm pre in first one much and second would be better with a tilting screen like n97/touch pro 2 though n97 mechanism is better for that. anyway you'd think they could do something a bit more innovative even though they're not a hardware company first they done a good job with zune hd judging by the renders they should be handing the job to whoever designed the zunehd to make.

I like the minimalistic keyboard on the pure! Some of the QWERTY phones nowadays pack as much as possible onto the keyboards, gets irritating at times. Also looks to be texting-friendly - another must.

Hope this releases before December/January, as that is when my plan ends and I'll be getting a new phone. Anyone hear any rumors about a (rough) release date?

Oh, my plan ran out last year... I'm on month to month (verizon hasn't forced me into another contract yet). I was waiting for the winmo 6.5 or android phones which I knew would be coming out end of this year. But the rumor is that these will be out spring/summer next year. I haven't needed anything crazy yet so I might be able to keep waiting.

I too use Verizon. I'm reluctant to go onto the month to month basis because I really want a new phone as my current phone - while not horrible - isn't exactly the most text friendly, and I average several thousand texts a month.

I could get a new phone and go month to month, but as I understand it I'd have to pay full retail on the phone then. And for a phone like the enV touch, (which is my current choice) full retail is about $410. Not exactly pocket change.

I hear ya... If I was going to get a new phone, i'd go on contract (unless I only wanted a very basic phone) to get the discount etc.

I have the "new every two discount" waiting as well, so... I'll hold out as long as I can. lol My luck, some seriously kickbutt phone will shine from the heavens just around xmas forcing me to jump in... then an even more kickbutt phone will appear once I'm locked in. oy

Seeing that it's Microsoft, it will have variable pricing like "Pure Starter Edition", "Pure Home Edition", "Pure Teen Edition", "Pure Professional", "Pure Premium", which all look the same, but the Starter Edition only allows running 3 apps at a time.

Hmm.. i like the simplicity. I am glad they seem to be keeping slideout keyboards. Having both touch interface and tactile kb is a must for my next phone.

I prefer Pure, but that turtle formfactor seems to be popping up alot lately.

Well they are also missing all the frotn face hard keys MS said all new WM phones needs to have

You are kidding, right? Why would it matter who produces it, as long as it is good. And these look very un-ZuneHD ie. Not good.

Interesting......

IF, and it is a big IF Microsoft produces a Windows Mobile device around the size of an iPhone, with a slide out keyboard, multi-touch screen, the Zune software, and an app store they might just have a winner.

After reading all the tea leafs it looks like this just might be the case for a Windows Mobile 7 type device.

If they can produce one at the same width of an iPhone, with a pull out screen that would be truly amazing.

All I have seen with these latest announcements is that Microsofts Marketing department is in overdrive. I haven't actually heard any details, or release dates, or much else.

My guess is this has to do with Windows Mobile 7 and the social networking they are going to push. Jessica Smithson is either the phone user or someone they keep in touch with...just my guess.

Can't be Windows Mobile 7 though can it? Don't all Windows Phones now require a Windows key? Neither of these have it.

Who's to say what the requirements for WinMo7 will be.

i think Jessica Smithson is supposed to represent 'you' , as in the hypothetical user... it would be cool if the UI actually looked like that...

Wow. Those look like dumb/feature phones.

They look like those laptops for kids or even the ones from OLPC program...lol

I think they are renders and not pictures. I will wait for more information on them.

They may look like it, but if these things are running Windows Mobile 7 on Tegra processors, they're far from feature phones.

Interesting... Out of the two, I prefer the "Pure". The "Turtle" just looks cheap and bulky.
