Lenovo: Pretend we never said anything about 8in tablets

Earlier this week, Lenovo said that, due to demand, they would stop selling 8in tablets in the US and have diverted supplies of existing devices to other markets. Well, the company is now back-tracking on that statement and wants you to pretend like it never even happened.

In a statement posted on Lenovo's site, they said that they will continue to sell 8in tablets in the US and that they have new products coming for the holiday shopping season. The full statement is posted below:

We will continue to bring new Windows devices to market across different screen sizes, including a new 8-inch tablet and 10-inch tablet coming this holiday. Our model mix changes as per customer demand, and although we are no longer selling ThinkPad 8 in the U.S., and we have sold out of Miix 8-inch, we are not getting out of the small-screen Windows tablet business as was reported by the media. In short, we will continue to sell both 8 and 10 inch Windows tablets in both the U.S. and non-U.S markets.

Lenovo does clarify the previous statements by saying that they are no longer selling the ThinkPad 8 in the US but they have sold out of Miix 8 inch tablets which shows that there is demand for these products. And as such, the company does not have any plans to abandon the 8in market segment.

So, what's the deal here? it's business as usual for Lenovo. Some products have sold out in the US while others have been discontinued for US markets and new products will arrive soon to replace the outgoing models.

Hello,

I was very interested in the ThinkPad 8" tablet, but stayed away from purchasing it because I really wanted a 64-bit version, and because it was a gen-one device, and I was sure there would be improvements in ruggedness and reliability in the subsequent generation.

I do hope that Lenovo is able to bring out an improved model in the US market.

I'm sorry but this was NEOWIN's misinterpretation on the initial statement, not Lenovo backtracking. Gosh. Way to mess with people's minds.

That's normal - probably Microsoft had contacted with Lenovo so they needed to retract their decision and/or announcement.

So Neowin misinterpreted the initial press letter, but instead of pointing that out they try to make it look like it is Lenovo that is maneuvering.

In Neowin's defence the site they referenced also misinterpreted. But when you trace it back to the Original source (the quote from a Lenovo rep) then they are indeed only talking about the Thinkpad 8 being sold less in the USA than elsewhere. They did state they would focus on 10'' Windows tablet but they didnt mention the Miix8. EDIT: but Neowin's headline is in poor taste.

you cant defend someone who blindly copies some other site's interpretation, especially a site that has a very clear agenda. if you read the crapworld article, they even get some hack who calls himselfs an analyst to comment that its impossible for windows tablets to compete.

theres no backtracking. the initial statements are clear, they were merely diverting current stock of the thinkpad 8 model to places with more demand so they can get rid of inventory, while the miix 2 was sold out. they never claimed they werent going to sell 8 inch windows tablets in the U.S anymore.

How dare you make sense of this! Windows tablets are d00med, stop trying to deny it! /s

So in other words after they made their announcement earlier in the week Microsoft had 'words' with Lenovo to make them change their mind. :p

Well, you could expect the worse or they really did only just stop selling Thinkpad8. In other countries 8'' tablets are selling really well. And apparantely the Miix8 is doing good in the US as well.

May be to clear out stock, they pretend that they never have said that... Infact, what Lenovo is doing lately ?? They have the Motorola under them yet no break through for their mobile product ??
