Microsoft Teams is the video conferencing tool of choice at a lot of organizations worldwide, especially during the ongoing pandemic. The company regularly updates it with new features and enhancements, and has many other capabilities planned in the pipeline too. Given its widespread usage, the company has now announced that it is acquiring Peer5, which will help it optimize its current offerings on Teams.
For those unaware, Peer5 is a company that provides an Enterprise Content Delivery Network (eCDN) solution based on WebRTC. This runs inside your browser and optimizes bandwidth usage, which is especially critical in video calls where there are lots of participants. Microsoft says that Peer5's mesh networks scale automatically and self-balance too depending upon the load. What's even better is that the technology does not require any endpoint installation or modifications to the existing network topology.
Microsoft says that it had received many requests from its customers to provide an integrated eCDN solution for Teams, and this acquisition answers that call. Through Peer5, Microsoft will be able to deliver high-quality video-streaming experiences to large audiences in a secure manner, all while optimize corporate network performance.
The financial value of the deal has not been disclosed. Microsoft has stated that it will continue to honor agreements with existing Peer5 customers and will also support existing eCDN solutions offered by its certified partners.
