Neowin launches NeoGamr.net

Today we are proud to announce the launch of NeoGamr.net, which will focus entirely on gaming news.

Additional registration isn't required for members already registered on Neowin, as they will be logged in at both Neowin and NeoGamr. The forums will remain a hub for both sites as well. As you will see from the subtle change in the header, switching to either site is easy as well.

Gaming news on Neowin hasn't proved to be too popular, despite having an experienced gaming writer in John Callaham on the team who has had to shift focus away from gaming, to tech news. We felt that a front end for gaming news was needed, and we hope it can go on to be as successful as Neowin already is.

NeoGamr will feature the already well established podcasts and original content such as interviews, reviews, giveaways and a much faster paced gaming news coverage. Neowin will from here on in focus solely on tech and software news, but there will be a panel in the sidebar of the main page that displays the most recent NeoGamr news.

Oh, and NeoGamr will also be at E3.

Over to you John :)

Terrible domain choice. Just another website with the "r" trend and easily confused with neogamer.net neogamer.com neogamr.com and so on. Maybe games.neowin.net is most recognisable (http://www.neowingames.com is taken)

I do like the dark theme on the front page, even if it has an ugly red, I find dark backgrounds much easier on the eyes. Any chance of a darkside/midnight theme for the neowin.net frontpage again like I can with the forums?

Eww, doesn't look like a "gamer" website. None of the graphics/theme reference gaming at all. Maybe incorporate gaming related logos, graphics etc into the theme.

Could you define "broken" in such a way as to give us useful information to be able to fix it? If you're using IE, there's a chance you may need to log out of Neowin, and log back in again in order for Neogamr to recognize you.

Hey guys,
Really good job on the new site

However one niggling little thought still haunts my mind
which sounds/looks better I would imagine that neogamer looks better than neogamr but the later sounds slightly better

What do you guys think? Still GREAT JOB!!!

I'm only curious, but what do the two names sound like to you? I took them as sounding the same.

Looks nice. Are these going to be the same articles from Neowin only filtered to just be game news?

Gaming news will be posted solely on Neogamr, but will be linked in the sidebar on Neowin, and the dropdown on the "News" tab

Alright, thanks.

Show Short News/Hide Short News seems to do absolutely nothing. Also, the tooltip for it says 'Toggle software/gaming news'.

Nice work

How about a NeoMac?!?! /kidding

NeoMac.... it could work!

Especially considering all the Apple news lately, but then the Neowin site would have nothing on it

Really? Please look at our MS/Apple news posting over the last 3 months.

I have a question Steve... will there be any original content posted on NeoGamr? Or will it all just be mirrored from the Gaming news category here? I.e. I read everything that's posted in the news here, is there any point of me also checking NeoGamr?

Gaming news will now be over on NeoGamer, currently we shoved a lot of gaming news to a less viewed section and we now want to highlight the content from that....

Here is some original content we have already pushed, news like this and more will now be over at NeoGamr

All gaming news will be posted to NeoGamr in the future, all existing gaming news has already been moved over.

Great stuff! Bookmarked!

Latest Forum Posts on NeoGamr i think should only be pulled from the Gaming sections of Neowin forum

This is an idea someone also mentioned on IRC. We're considering it, and might put it out in an update.

I also cannot log in. However I love the theme for it. I wish to be able to use that on the forums.
it looks like it a darker modification of the pro theme

I also would like to use it on the forums

You guys missed an E.

Please fix this nonsense. Dropping vowels is no longer "cool".
There's nothing wrong with "NeoGamer".

Right now, the logo looks like someone was going to write "NeoGamm" and got bored half way through the second "m".

Site looks good! Actually it looks similar to a site I visit regular, just can't remember its name

Anyway, when I try to login, its getting stuck for me on http://www.neowin.net/sso/login/2 - just a white screen of death

Getting the same thing here but doesn't look bad!

Login issues are now fixed, I forgot I needed to recompile PHP to enable support for something

Now Login/Register has disappeared and I'm auto-logged in. Tried logging out and in, and it works great now! Good job getting it fixed so quickly!

We wanted to make it so you could be seemlessly logged in and out of both sites at once, noone wants to have to type in their password more than once!

You guys are honestly using PHP? I thought as this was a tech enthusiast site that you'd be using hiphop...

hiphop just converts PHP into c++, so stuff is still written in PHP to start with. It's on my list of things to test out, but it remains to be seen if it will even work properly with my framework etc

Which browser are you on?

I noticed in Chrome if the "Block third-party cookies and site data" setting is enabled the log in doesn't work. I added "http://www.neowin.net"; to the exception list and it seems to be working as expected now.

IE9 just reloads the page on login

Had to go register and then login for it to work

Haha it's not exactly 'PHP' to start with, some code changes can be needed, and converting PHP C extensions to work is an utter bitch, well I guess I don't know C++ but meh.

Awesome!
Not a huge fan of the theme though.

I like the color red. It looks different I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.

Personally I think a white background (ZOMGZZZ!!1), retaining the dark grey boxes, and replacing the red with something nicer would look... clean.

Too many gaming sites use very dark themes... I'm not in a dungeon!
