Steve Jobs: Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone

While Steve Jobs has more important matters to attend to these days, he still tries to keep himself busy through his personal email inbox.

This time, a TechCrunch reader questioned the Apple CEO over the rejection of the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and pornography on the App Store. Jobs responded by directing him to buy an Android phone for his sexual needs and claiming fault for the comic book app rejection. TechCrunch has verified the IPs recorded in the headers to be legitimate.

This isn’t Steve’s first comment over porn on the App Store. At the iPhone OS 4 event earlier this month he brought up porn on Android when asked in the Q&A session: "You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go – so we’re not going to go there.”

While it doesn’t look like explicit apps will be heading to the App Store any time soon, iPhone users should at least be able to use Safari or other web browsers to satisfy their sexual needs when on the go.

It was just a JOKE! If you stop taking it all so seriously, it's quite amusing.

Maybe he should have put a little smiley face at the end and people would lighten up:
"Folks who want that can buy an Android :-) "

Amazing how such a little throwaway line can generate so much heat.

I say he's a jerk like the rest of us and a rich jerk at that, his terrible personality with customers aside or not he has some unique tech out there although i wouldn't own one cause i dont wanna be labeled as the 14 year old girl that lives in trailer and can afford 99 cent songs and apps.

All in all he's rich making people like "fanboys" or critics angry. thats the media nowadays if the media hates you your the best person alive we have a ton of celebs that are hated but are paid more because of it.

The apple products themselves are faulty like anything elsee on the market, their customer service isn't the best i heard a friend on the phone with them and it did seem a bit unfair to treat a customer like that, but hey i'd hate a customer if i had to work in a cubical 10 to 12 hours a day.

I just want a smartphone with a good spell check -_-

I'm really starting to be convinced that Steve Jobs is going nuts. Now he has a 'moral responsibility' to censor the content that we see in our phones??? What is this, nazi germany? Some neo-con religious sect? This is WRONG in so many ways, it is unconstitutional. Knowing that Steve is liberal, it is amazing he's saying this, he must be going sick in his head, someone must stop him.

How is it unconstitutional?

Frankly I don't see the need for a "porn app" as long as a phone has a web browser and video player. But it's the principle of it that matters to me. I don't want a phone that dictates which apps I may or may not install.

So, in every 3 days we'll have the usual "Steve replies" post here on neowin? Please, this is getting pathetic. Like if his answers were anything we weren't expecting, jeez. Seriously neowin, the first episode of "Steve replies" was nice, but enough now! And I'm guessing that after the first season of "Steve replies" is over, a new show is coming: "What did Steve said again..."

I find this stupid. I mean a CEO recommending another big company's software to use?
If I were the one to get such kind of a response I would sell every freaking device I had from Apple.

It always makes me lol apple's need to blame other companies when defending themselfe. Think about iPad's problems with wifi: obviously the problem is with all-around-the-world router productors that don't build them compatible with apple.

If I want to view porn on my Apple device, then it's my right to do so, not big brother company minding my morals.

I've been using a Moto Droid since November and I have yet to find any of these porn apps he speaks so much of (outside of the porn app store)

PS: apple used to be a fancy quality brand. i envied ppl who afforded apple products. now? th company is like a white trash bitchy needy teen chick, while most of their customers are frustrated snobs.. not all.. just mostly. Steve gathered the worst crowd with it's company image.

Haha, you must be crazy. He may have a special personality, but I think that's almost essential to do an as incedible job as a CEO as he is. Apple was on the verge on bankruptcy when he took charge of Apple, and now he is... here: http://is.gd/bB77f

Now guess again why he was chosen CEO of the year. The way his stock is climbing is killing even Google's, and let's not even talk about Microsoft's.

I really don't see why you guys complain about this all the time. Who cares is apple monitors what apps are sold in their store. Afterall its not like you buy every single app that comes out of that store right?

Or better yet, anything beyong $1.99..

some people lol.

I could give two ****s about what he does in his Appstore. The fact that he has to slam other platforms (first MS, now Android) using hypocritical bs is what annoys me.

After all he is talking about a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone, he's not talking about the appstore itself.

He didn't slam Android, just said that it's more open than the iPhone OS. If anything, that's a compliment. If people want porn, they should move to a platform that allows it, and Apple does not plan on providing that platform.

I'm not sure what the problem is? Pornographic video games are just in poor taste. Skin apps are just trying to rip people off to pay $0.99 for material all available online and accessible via Mobile Safari. Videos can be loaded in the iPod app or any 3rd party "video" app (which all seem to come with convenient pass code options to keep your porn secure). If people want porn on the iPhone, it is as easy to get. Just not in the form of a Porn App.

Whoop-dee-doo. Windows Phone 7 Series will no-doubt have the same restrictions in place.

On top of that, if you download and install "Porn" applications for your PC you are just asking for a virus.

I think that these Steve Jobs emails are fake.

The problem is not about taste. It is rather someone else telling you what you can/can't do on a device you paid for.

I don't mind what he said, it's not like apple has ever said anything different about Porn on the App Store..

And I do like that he took responsibility for the rejecting of the cartoonist's app., rather than deflecting that they were making an exception for it or something like that.

He always was like this, and he brought Apple to be among the most successful IT companies in the world. That's pretty much Steve Jobs in a nutshell.

I agree as well...Apple can do whatever they want. I don't shy away from my displeasure for the company, and when presented the opportunity (in the form of a contract being up) I'll move to a different device.

So what about when Sony starts saying that only comedies can be played on their tv's? or how Nikon says only kids can be in pictures taken with their cameras? At what point is what you are buying yours? Do you have to pay over 500$ for it to be yours? At what point are you the boss of you? Apparently apple fans are fine with being told how to live, what to view, and whatever else mr. jobs says. That my friends, is the real term of "sheep".

Edited by shakey, Apr 20 2010, 4:03pm : i said nixon instead of nikon, ooops

Shakey, you analogy is full of holes. It would more like saying "what about if Disney refused to produce pron movies" or "what if Nintendo refused to allow AO rated games on the Wii" or "what if Walmart refused to sell music with explicit lyrics". Apple isn't stopping people from browsing pron sites with the browser, nor are they making it against the EULA to take nude pictures with the iPhone's camera. They are simply refusing to sell explicit material through their store.

Actually, my analogy isn't full of holes, you only helped prove my point. Yes, companies can do it, but why would you want to put yourself in the place of that company telling you what to do? You apparently missed the WHOLE POINT of what I said, and instead, tried to defend someone limiting others on something, like it was a good thing. If you want crappy music that doesn't have the real lyrics, go ahead and shop at walmart. If you want to play only kids games, buy nintendo. But, the question is, why would you do that? Why would you limit yourself to something, when there are so many options that do not limit you, that all does the exact same thing.?
Sure, say its a good thing, you only reinforced the "sheep" stereotype.

Not sure but...can't you download porn apps on jailbroken iPods?

Not jailbroken mine so I dunno, though I do realise Jobs wouldn't suggest jailbreaking an iPod ...

And you seem to fail at reading and common sense. The whole idea is for non-jailbroken iPhones to have access to such apps/content through Apple's app store, not for jailbroken ones. Why would you bother e-mailing Steve Jobs about something that does not pertain to Apple's services?

Who cares about jailbreaking them just for that? The Internet is shock full of porn, just use Safari if you want it on an iPhone. *shrug*

Not to troll, but how would you watch the videos, given that most video sites use FLASH?

They didn't have proof it was broken?

All companies have a right to refuse service if they believe a customer has abused their product - my experience with Apple repairs has been very good, however. Got my iPod replaced a few years ago without any problem, and an Apple authorized retailer actually fixed some obvious user-caused problems (which I didn't even ask to get fixed) with my laptop a few weeks ago.

Moral responsibility??? Don't make me laugh!! How hard is it for Apple to implement a system which won't let you download any X-rated apps unless you have a CC attached to the iTunes account?? I am pretty sure parents don't just attach their CC to their children's accounts and tell them to go nuts buying apps and music and movies. Steve Jobs is just trying to push some kind of agenda.

I'm really starting to think some (or perhaps all) of these supposed Steve Jobs e-mails are faked. What proof has anyone seen that they weren't simply typed up in Notepad? And quite honestly, misusing "and" instead of "an" in his reply doesn't seem like something Steve Jobs would do, although it is all too common for forum-kiddies to do that.

Because we haven't seen any denying in those messages? And don't come with the "they don't care" answer, I'm pretty sure Apple and Jobs care TOO MUCH about what they say.

When did Steve Jobs become the master at spelling? People make mistakes. I'd also assume that since "and" is a word, it would not be marked with a red underline to signify that it was misspelled, and simply overlooked when writing a reply.

Exactly, no statement has been made from Apple or Jobs himself stating these emails were fake/false. There articles and comments about Jobs/Apple are damaging to both...so they would deny it if it was not real.

Stop being a bunch of fanboys and just learn to accept it...Apple is not the "golden child" of the industry. They **** up like anyone else...but unlike everyone else, Apple is not changing. They are stuck in proprietary world that is starting to **** people off...including Mac users.

Thats because standard practice for rumours is to ignore them, since any response usually generates unwanted attention. This is also why most big company execs don't respond to emails like this one, and hence why myself and others are very dubious about the validity of these emails.

If he lets porn go live on the App Store, there will be all kinds of abuses by the developers. They're always going to push the App Store a little further, no matter what Apple permits or refuses, and in the end they will lose total control. It's also one of the most basic principle of a good society to disallow things, but that's another story
I don't agree with him refusing a Firefox on the iPhone, an Opera (fixed ) or competitors to Apple's applications, but porn really doesn't have its place.

The original request at the iphone OS 4.0 event was would apple ever allow unsigned apps on the iphone. It wasn't a request for porn. However that is how Steve chose to respond. Personally i'd like to see all apps on the phone and not just the ones that apple approves.

iPhone users should at least be able to use Safari or other web browsers to satisfy their sexual needs when on the go.

There a list of other non-porn related reasons why someone would like Andriod > iOS
