Verizon starts blocking 4Chan.org

Verizon has taken bold steps over the last 72 hours to block the popular photo sharing website, 4chan.org.  Verizon has confirmed to 4chan that they are intentionally blocking the website but did not state a specific reason.

"After an hour and a half on the phone, we've received confirmation from Verizon's Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are 'explicitly blocked'" wrote founder moot on 4Chan.org.

While Verizon did not specifically state why they were blocking the site, AT&T did block 4chan.org in the past after a suspected DDOS attack was originating from the sites IP but was actually a technical mistake on AT&T’s end.

4chan is known for its extremely active and technically savvy community.  Blocking a high profile site like this and not coming clean about its reasoning may hurt Verizon as the community is well organized and it’s highly likely that they could coordinate an attack against Verizon in little to no time.

Why doesn't Verizon just shoot the members of 4chan? The internet doesn't need them.

And who are you to decide?

Glad to hear that this wasn't that big of a block to begin with, but slightly disappointed I got out the /popcorn for nothing.

Yet you love and keep using all their memes around the internet. Hypocrite too much?

4chan says 'Verizon Wireless should be unblocking us later today/tomorrow...'

So yeah, they're fine. And to all , haters /b/ is awesome no matter what you say. Most of /b/tards are geeks, so we got plenty here on Neowin as well.

First rule of 4chan don't talk about 4chan. Second rule of 4chan follow the first rule.

Rules 1 and 2 only apply to raids.

ISPs are merely a conduit for data, they should not be messing with the traffic. Sites should be blocked on the user's end, not at the ISP. If you want to block a phone number, you do that on your phone, the company doesn't randomly start blocking numbers for you, numbers that you may want to call.

Verizon has many legs, can someone confirm what Verizon leg is doing this or is it all of them.
Legs = Fios, DSL, Internet(Modem). If you deal with Verizon you will find that the Fios people never know what the dsl people are doing and for those still on modem thats another group that doesnt know anything about anyone else. I for one would like to know, as a V Fios user. (Oh and 4chan still works on FIOS unless they removed the block for everyone as of me typing this).

4chan is like a bad cold, ride it out the inital symptoms and it'll get bored and go away.

The author of this article should mention this is for verizon wireless, and devices/software like blackberry or opera are not in this ban due to the nature of their software (proxy)

4chan is dope man ... wanna get high look 4chan ... wanna take a dump ... do it while surfing 4chan ...

on all seriousness what gives? ... block kiddie porn not random sites (or better yet block the net all together .. much safer)

it's just full of p0rn !!!!!!
so i dont see any problems in blocking it :)
although 3UK has its own adult section :)

If these pathetic losers "co-ordinate an attack" it will embarrass me and I'm nothing to do with it. I hate these kind of geeky frontlines!

Why, because they usually work?

No, because these pathetic losers surely have something better to do? Seriously ... in ten years they'll either look back and say "Oh... wow ... what a moron I was", or they'll still be sat in Mum's basement with pasty skin, stuck to their chair with a headset on calling themselves L337/\/\4573R or something. Either way, they wasted years of their lives doing something utterly worthless. I actually know a few people who were prominent hackers back in the 90's and they grew out of it and realised how pathetic they were, yet how awesome they thought they were.

If Verizon didn't have a good reason to give they will in the near future.... Hopefully my service quality doesn't diminish as a result of this.

I am not sure what they mean by blocked as I am able to access it fine on my end.

I just accessed it from my Verizon Blackberry so I'm a tad confused as well unless Verizon has unblocked them.

From status.4chan.org: "Note: Users with mobile browsers that proxy (BlackBerry, Opera) won't necessarily have issues accessing the boards."

This might get entertaining!

Isn't it just to switch to a DNS service instead? Like OpenDNS or Google DNS.

If you have any shred of innocence or sanity, I would think twice about visiting that website, especially /b/. Tread wisely.

Wat? There's nothing wrong with 4chan. It's even set as my homepage.

Really? This is a statement you want to be associated with?

Exactly. It's just a legitimate website being unfairly silenced by ISPs. I call for freedom of speach protection!

What's with all the 4chan hate?

I don't know. I've found out about a lot of obscure music/games/anime from 4chan.

I hope they know what they've just unleashed. The 4chan collective is pretty much unstoppable when they put their mind to things. Uh oh.

Good, that site is so worthless nowadays.

gotta love censoring huh?
screw freedom of choice, let others chose for you what's worth being displayed on your own pc screen, through your own internet setup.

the inet is too bloated nowadays anyway. Finally someone gives it a good go!

Rules 1 & 2!! XD

And anyways, I thought the rest of 4chan was relatively civilised in comparison!

P.S.
There will be blood!

Internet cesspool might have been a more accurate description.

"Image Board" is the generally accepted term for 4chan and other boards of it's type.

But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:11-12).

Feels appropriate.
