Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal hit with more layoffs, this time affecting over 100 staff

Eidos Montreal is the latest developer to get hit with a mass layoffs wave in 2026. The Montreal-based studio is a part of the Embracer Group, and today, it revealed that 124 team members are being let go, calling it a "difficult day" for the studio. At the same time, studio head David Anfossi is also leaving the company.

The studio is most well-known for its modern Deus Ex RPGs, including 2011"s Human Revolution and 2016"s Mankind Divided. Its other work includes Marvel"s Guardians of the Galaxy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Thief, alongside being a support studio for a number of Crystal Dynamics and Xbox projects.

"The reduction in workforce affecting 124 employees is a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams," said a LinkedIn post by Eidos Montreal, announcing the layoffs. "Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos-Montréal can be most effective."

Meanwhile, Anfossi leaves behind Eidos Montreal after 19 years at the company. He has been a part of the team since its work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and has even worked on Microsoft projects like Grounded 2 and the Fable reboot as the studio pivoted to being a support entity.

Prior to Embracer, Square Enix was the parent company behind Eidos Montreal. The studio was sold to Embracer in 2022 as a part of Square Enix"s big western studio sell-off for $300 million.

"We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance," added the announcement today. "Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward."

Eidos Montreal seems to be getting hit with at least one major layoff wave every year recently. The studio shed 97 team members in 2024 while canceling a new Deus Ex project. Then in 2025, a further 75 roles were cut by Embracer. It"s unclear what the current headcount at the studio is and if there are any projects in development. A new studio head has not been announced yet either.
