The fourth installment in the Mafia series landed last week, taking the story to Sicily, Italy, in the 1900s for a prequel adventure starring Enzo Favara. While Mafia: The Old Country touts plenty of action and a deep narrative, the free-roam option is quite hollow compared to previous games. Now, developer Hanger 13 has confirmed that a proper Free Ride mode is in the works for the title.
The Free Ride option will arrive as a free update to Mafia: The Old Country. This is slated to land "in the coming months," according to the developer, so there isn"t a firm release date attached to the feature just yet. Without going into any specifics, the studio said that it will add "new activities and gameplay content" to the mode for players to experience.
While Mafia: The Old Country does offer an "Explore" mode from the chapter selection menu right now, almost nothing can be interacted with here, with only collectibles from the campaign being available to be found.
The open-world free roam mode has been a staple in previous games, but unlike in the latest entry, various activities like vehicle delivery missions, races, and easter eggs were present for players to find.
Meanwhile, Hanger 13 offered some statistics on how players have been enjoying the title. It shared that over 600 million shots have been fired in-game, while 185 million enemies have been "dispatched." The healing item bandages have so far been used 17 times, and 10 billion Dinari has been earned on the streets of Valle Dorata by Enzo. Over on Twitch, the title has been watched for over three million hours already as well.
While publisher 2K has yet to share any official sales figures, according to the analyst firm Sensor Tower, the $50 single-player title had sold over 800,000 copies five days into launch. The report states that almost half of the sales have come from the PlayStation 5.
