Gemini's new Lyria 3 model turns your ideas, photos, and videos into songs in seconds

Google is eager to bring Gemini to its billions of customers. To that end, it is actively trying various avenues, such as integration with Docs, Chrome, Maps, Calendar, and more. However, it is now trying a new direction through its Lyria 3 model, allowing users to create songs and music from an idea or a photo within seconds.

Google"s generative music model, Lyria 3 is now available as a beta in the Gemini app. You can give it prompts like "a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding their match", and Gemini will be able to quickly whip up a catchy track. In fact, you can even upload an image or video and ask the model to take inspiration from it as it writes its track. You don"t need to write any lyrics yourself, but you do get full control over the vocals, tempo, and style.

Lyria 3 is capable of generating 30-seconds tracks right now, so don"t expect it to get rid of the music industry as we know it. In fact, Google has emphasized that the model"s goal isn"t to create masterpieces, but to give users a fun way to express themselves. The generated track also gets a custom cover art created by Nano Banana, so that you can easily share your creation with others.

Google wants to get this into the hands of users as quickly as possible. This is why it has already integrated Lyria 3 with YouTube Shorts via Dream Track, you can find out more details about that here.

The Mountain View firm has noted that generated soundtracks are embedded with SynthID, and as such, it"s very easy to detect AI-generated tracks if you upload them to Gemini and ask.

Google has been trialing Lyria for a couple of years now, and what it learned over that time is being baked into the model. The AI prioritized original expression and creativity, which is why if you ask it to mimic an artist, it will only "broadly" use the artist"s style as an inspiration. However, Google has admitted that this approach might not be watertight, so it is possible to file copyright complaints, should the need arise.

Lyria 3 is available in the Gemini app for all 18+ customers in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese. Google plans to expand coverage even more by rolling out the model on desktop today and to the mobile app soon.
