Until now, the absence of a consistent, privacy‑preserving standard for confirming users’ ages online has left parents and businesses relying on a mishmash of stop‑gap measures. And, as recent regulatory developments highlight, these stop‑gaps can fail spectacularly.
In mid‑January, for example, Ofcom mandated that every platform hosting adult material must implement robust age checks by the end of July. However, by late March, OnlyFans had already been fined £1.05 million for misleading the regulator about its verification technology. Finally, in late June, Pornhub and several other major adult‑content sites committed to rolling out government‑approved age checks by 25 July under Ofcom’s Online Safety Act. These high‑profile interventions make it abundantly clear that patchwork solutions no longer suffice.
Against this backdrop of regulatory pressure, today, at the Global Digital Collaboration Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Google and Germany’s Sparkasse have unveiled a partnership that promises to transform online age verification. By teaming up with Sparkasse’s network of 343 regional savings banks, which serve over a 50 million customers, the two organisations are poised to deliver the first nationally scaled, wallet‑based digital age‑verification service in the European Union.
Under this initiative, Sparkasse customers will receive a verified age credential via their existing banking app. When visiting partner websites or apps, they will be able to confirm their age with a single click, no additional documents required, and without disclosing any personal information beyond the fact of their eligibility. For operators of online services, this offers a reliable mechanism to admit only age‑appropriate users, thereby strengthening child protection and regulatory compliance.
The solution is fully integrated with Android and Chrome, ensuring that age checks are as seamless as they are secure. Looking ahead, Google suggests that the same infrastructure could facilitate entirely new digital‑identity services. The Sparkasse‑Google credential will roll out over the coming months.
