KDE Plasma 6.4 has gotten its second bug fix release, version 6.4.2, and it is a bit of a mixed bag for power management. Due to a systemd limitation that was causing issues for Active Directory managed systems, KDE says it has partially rolled back a power management fix introduced in version 6.4.0. The change, which involved alarm wakeups, has been reverted in plasma-powerdevil.service to fix the regression.
KWin, the window manager that powers all the desktop effects and window handling, got a lot of attention. A bug causing the menus in the Spectacle screenshot tool to fade incorrectly has been squashed, and some safeguards were added to prevent invalid brightness values from being set. The Night Light feature can also get a bit closer to the edges of the color gamut. A few other small but welcome fixes in this update include:
- A fix in Discover ensures the sources page does not reference the wrong name, which could cause display issues.
- For digital artists, the tablet settings now correctly refresh the "Map to screen" option when you reset the configuration, fixing a bug from the big 6.4 update.
- The audio volume applet has had its minimum size adjusted in its compact form to prevent some visual glitches.
- A fix for Wireguard connections allows them to be activated automatically even when stored privately.
On Plasma Desktop, a few visual hiccups were addressed. The "New!" badge on freshly installed applications in the Kickoff launcher now uses a more appropriate background color, and you can now launch favorites by simply hitting Enter.
Folder View also saw a fix for its text labels to make sure they display correctly. On-screen displays, like the volume or brightness indicator, now work properly on the lock screen.
As for Plasma Mobile, the Do Not Disturb feature has been fixed, and some animation signals were tidied up to prevent them from firing unnecessarily.
Powerdevil also got a sanity check to prevent it from trying to suspend a machine that is already in the process of suspending. The weather widget had its data source updated after Environment Canada changed its URL.
This is a maintenance release after all, so there are no new features to play with, only bugs to address. If your particular annoyance was not on the list, the next bug fix release for Plasma 6.4 is scheduled two weeks from today (Monday, 15th July).
