If you work with LaTeX a lot, there"s some good news for you: Google is improving the way it handles the system inside the Gemini app.
Google says that this new update "makes it much easier for everyone to create professional documents," as users previously had to rely on specialized editors and possess "significant technical expertise" just to find and fix errors. For anyone unfamiliar, LaTeX is what people in academic and scientific fields use to create documents with complex formatting, like mathematical equations, intricate tables, and multi-column layouts. It is a powerful system, but it has not always been the most user-friendly thing to work with.
In Gemini Canvas, there"s now an 𝒇𝚡 button for adding LaTeX to any document. You can also edit existing LaTeX when you click the formula directly in the canvas. In addition to that, when you copy LaTeX from a response in Gemini, it now copies the unrendered code.
In addition to LaTeX in Canvas, Google is introducing a new feature that lets you export your work to PDF. You can generate a PDF using LaTeX code and then get a preview right within the Gemini interface before you download the file for sharing or printing.
On the web and mobile web, this PDF export feature is fully available. The Gemini app on Android and iOS, however, is limited to "read-only viewing" for the time being. So you can see the documents but not create them from a mobile device just yet.
Both the improved LaTeX rendering and PDF export features are available to these Google Workspace customers: Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Education Plus, and Nonprofits.
In other Gemini news, the LLM is a huge part of the new Fitbit overhaul that will start rolling out to Premium subscribers tomorrow. In the updated app, the AI acts as a personal health coach, creating customized workout and sleep plans. For example, if you"re sore after a workout, you can ask the Fitbit coach to adjust your exercise plan for the next day.
