Google's home-baked cloud storage service, Google Drive, is getting another Gemini-branded feature. Workspace customers can now use the video analysis capabilities of Google's generative AI chatbot.
The AI chatbot is already capable of summarizing YouTube videos. Google also launched its upgraded Gemini 2.5 Pro model that excels in video understanding and has scored 84.8% on the VideoMME benchmark.
With the latest Google Drive update, you can use the Gemini side panel with uploaded videos to get summaries and ask questions about the content. Gemini's side panel was added to Drive last year and lets you summarize long documents or entire folders. You can discuss topics, retrieve quick facts, or create new Google files and folders.
When watching a video uploaded to your Google Drive, you can click on the 'Ask Gemini' button in the top-right corner of the screen to use the new feature. You can throw natural language prompts like "Summarize this video," or “What are the highlights from this announcement video?" or “List action items from this meeting recording.” Google stated in a blog post that the feature currently works in the English language only.
It might help save some time that would otherwise be wasted going back and forth in a video trying to take notes. Google said that it's available through Google Drive's overlay previewer or a standalone file viewer in a new browser tab.
Google has begun rolling out the feature, which will take a few weeks to complete. It will be available to different Workspace tiers, including Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, Google AI Premium, and those who purchased Gemini add-ons.
Note that the Gemini video analysis feature only works if the Workspace admin has enabled captions for videos in their domain. It adds to the growing list of AI features in Google Drive, including nudges for quick access to features, folder interactions in more languages, and the ability to chat about specific files in the side panel.
