Nokia is a relative newcomer to the Android ecosystem, with a new family of devices developed by HMD Global. HMD has now confirmed that it will join other major manufacturers in delivering monthly security updates to its devices.
HMD unveiled its new lower-end Nokia 3 and mid-range Nokia 5 handsets at Mobile World Congress, joining the more premium Nokia 6 that launched in January. Buyers of these devices, which all run Android 7.0 Nougat, will no doubt be reassured by the promise of regular security patches.
However, we don"t yet know how timely HMD"s rollouts will be. It"s one thing to commit to monthly updates, but if they"re arriving weeks - or even months - after their original release, they"ll become a lot less valuable.
Last week, Google released its latest monthly security update for Android, quickly making it available to its supported Pixel and Nexus devices. BlackBerry was among the first manufacturers to bring the update to its handsets, but most companies generally take far longer to do so. Several Samsung Galaxy phones on AT&T, for example, only received the February update this week, while ZTE"s new Blade V8 Pro has only just been updated with the Android patches from January.
