Human Head Studios announces Rune: Ragnarok, 17 years after the original

When folks hear Human Head Studios, they might associate them with the 2006 title Prey, or with contributions to games like BioShock Infinite. However, the developer"s claim to fame was the brutal 2000 action-adventure title Rune which, 17 years later, is getting a sequel.

The short teaser trailer above reveals a slight glimpse into the grim landscape ravaged by Ragnarök, the equivalent of the end of the world in Norse mythology. Whereas the original Rune - developed in the Unreal Engine - cast the player as Ragnar, a young Viking warrior tasked to stop the god Loki from bringing about the end of days, its sequel takes place during Ragnarök and "places players in the middle of an epic battle where gods, beasts, and the last remaining humans struggle to survive."

In terms of the actual timeline of events, the trailer"s description gives a bit of a hint:

From birth, the children of the North hear tales of the end of the world. A battle so great the gods fall and the Nine Worlds are consumed by frost and fire. But these tales are false. The gods did not perish. For seven years our worlds have been devoured by death and destruction. Now, mankind must rise and do what the gods could not. Ragnarok must end.

The Gods Shall Fall.

Rune"s open-world RPG sequel is designed in the spirit of the original and, according to Project Director Chris Rhinehart, has "intense and brutal combat in a world steeped in Norse mythology."

As some may remember, rumors of a possible new Rune title had been floating around for a while, with the studio itself suggesting that it was "considering a sequel" as far back as 2012. While it is known that the game will arrive for PC, no details have been released yet regarding a release date or possible appearances on other platforms.
