Sony had a massive surprise for fans that tuned into its State of Play presentation today, with the finale being a look at its first-party Wolverine game. The game was first announced back in 2021, and finally, official gameplay of the superhero experience is finally here. Watch the Marvel"s Wolverine gameplay trailer above and the behind-the-scenes developer deep dive below.
As previously announced, Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel"s Spider-Man series for PlayStation and PC, is behind this project too. However, instead of the heroic feeling of Spider-Man with his non-lethal but acrobatic gameplay, Wolverine"s gameplay feels much more animal-like and aggressive, with Logan holding nothing back when dispatching his enemies.
The Marvel title will be telling a standalone storyline involving Wolverine, Mystique, Omega Red, and other characters, or Mutants, that X-Men fans should recognize. While the violence is turned up to 11, Insomniac has confirmed that this entry is set in the same universe as its Spider-Man games. It"s unclear if there will be any crossovers between the characters just yet though.
Actor Liam McIntyre is stepping into the role of Wolverine for the game, who is playing a version that is, as expected, haunted by his past of being a living weapon.
"In this story, he is on the hunt to uncover the secrets of a dark past that keeps eluding him," says Insomniac Games while describing the campaign. "Unfortunately, in this world, he’ll have to dig his claws deep to pull any shred of information that may lead to answers. Often, that means shredding into a relentless onslaught of enemies who aim to stop him by any means necessary. Fueled by unflinching resilience (and a rapid healing factor), Wolverine won’t go down easy if it means keeping the mission on task."
It seems the campaign will take players to various locations instead of focusing on a city or an open world environment. This will include "the island nation of Madripoor, the frosted wilderness of Canada, and the narrow city streets of Tokyo," according to the developer.
Insomniac added that it is building the combat to be fast, fluid, and ferocious with plenty of action set pieces that have Logan laying waste to his enemies. However, there will still be a heroism element to all the carnage.
