iPhone Air faces possible setback as Apple expected to cut down production

Apple introduced the iPhone Air last month in full glory, establishing it as a new product category by keeping it separate from the iPhone 17 series. The Cupertino giant"s thinnest phone ever made people skeptical about its strength, but Apple executives publicly challenged reporters to bend the device during an interview.

It was recently reported that the iPhone Air "sold out within minutes" in China soon after the device was up for pre-order. According to Apple"s Chinese website, you"ll get your iPhone Air delivered by the end of October or the start of November if you pre-order it now.

That said, it"s being reported now that Apple might reduce the production of its ultra-thin smartphone by one million units this year due to underperforming sales. This is according to the prediction made by the Japanese firm Mizuho Securities (via The Elec), which said that iPhone 17 series sales have been good so far, except for the iPhone Air.

Maybe the device didn"t quite hit the mark, and Apple cut corners for iPhone Air where it shouldn"t have. Previous reports suggest that 2025 is the start of a three-year cycle of major design changes, and that Apple is laying the groundwork for the long-expected foldable iPhone, and the iPhone Air is setting the stage for it.

Mizuho Securities notes that iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max recorded slightly higher sales compared to their predecessors during the same period last year. The firm predicts that Apple will boost the production of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max by two million, one million, and four million units, respectively, by the end of the year.

The overall prediction forecast for the iPhone 17 series this year has jumped from 88 million units to 94 million units. Another source is yet to support Mizuho"s predictions, but according to a separate report from South Korea"s NewsPim, Samsung is expected to pull the plug on Galaxy S26 Edge. The device will be the successor to the Galaxy S25 Edge launched earlier this year as an alternative to the iPhone Air.
